Triage

On a battlefield setting, triage is the name given to the medical assessment of injured and wounded soldiers, determining which soldiers get treated first due to the severity of their wounds.

This is not done with an eye towards getting as many fighting men back on their feet and charging the enemy, but done with saving lives at the front of every decision.

Unfortunately for Rangers FC, this is the situation we are now in, and yesterday saw the first high-profile casualty from the club services – the monthly magazine. The financial crises that are plaguing the club at present have been well-documented (and not-so-well-documented from others) recently and cuts, job losses and squad restructuring are all to be expected.

Rangers Monthly, which had replaced the long-running Rangers News last July, had been a popular and incredibly professional upgrade of the club's official magazine recently and many fans, myself included, will be deeply sad to see the publication suspended for the foreseeable future.

A club email statement issued yesterday said, “The production of the Rangers monthly magazine has been suspended during the period of administration. Subscriptions will remain valid and any issues not produced during this period will be added to the end of annual subscriptions.”

Club publications editor Andrew Dickson tweeted yesterday, “Off home. Thanks for all the kind messages re #RangersMonthly, glad you'll miss it during what's hopefully a short sabbatical.”

The introduction of the social media team over the last 12 months has been a huge improvement in the relations between the club and fans, and many, many fans will feel any absence if Andrew and the rest of the team are to be taken away from us during this period of administration.

Cancellation of the magazine does not bode so well for the rest of the employees at the club, both on-field and off, who must now be worried about what else will be next to fall under the axe of administration. It is widely expected that the members of the playing squad will be told today or tomorrow who is surplus to requirements and not to come back to Auchenhowie.

Writing for the club in magazines and online is a privilege and a pleasure – the writers here at RM and wider do it out of sheer enjoyment, so to do it for a living is truly a wonderful job and all of us here at RangersMedia are thinking of the media team over in sunny Govan in their hour of need.
