Speculation Rangers could be helped back to the top flight by re-formating the leagues has been growing.

But the Celtic chief executive has made it clear there is currently nothing on the table to consider and said: "If anybody can show what is the benefit of any kind of league reconstruction then, clearly, we will sit down and listen to them.

"If there is a will for a pyramid structure or a new distribution model, in principle we would support that because others would like it.

"But will it change the game or get more Scottish clubs into Europe? No.

"Is it going to grow the GDP (gross domestic product) or benefit the national team? No.

"So, in principle, fine. But is it going to make any difference? Not really.

"If somebody can come up with something, then fine. But it has to be more radical than the sort of discussions happening now.

"There has maybe been a lot of attention and energy given to that which might have been better focused somewhere else."

Lawwell was speaking as Celtic unveiled their annual accounts which showed they lost £7.37million before taxation, lifting their bank debt to £2.77m.

However, qualification for the Champions League has carried them back into the black, and the continued unearthing, developing and selling of players like Ki Sung-Yueng will remain at the core of their business plan.

And Lawwell had a ready answer for those who believe the reduced money available to the SPL clubs since the demise of Rangers should be more evenly distributed.

"We would have lost more than anybody – by a long, long way," he said.

"There are massive differences in scale. But there is no point in weakening Celtic – who are trying to participate in Europe and re-esta-blish the nation in Europe and go as far as we possibly can while put-ting £1.5m back into the pot – in order to do that.

"The pot just gets smaller, and that could potentially happen."
