Smith Urges Players Not To Get Carried Away

WALTER Smith today warned his players not to get carried away with the chance to move ahead in the title race.

Rangers can go four points clear of their Old Firm rivals if they win games in hand against Gretna and St Mirren.

But the Ibrox gaffer feels his side still have to prove they can maintain their challenge over an entire season.

"The wins we need aren't simply going to come along. This is the last thing that can happen," he said.

advertisement"The whole thing about this season is to show we can sustain a run of results. That is why Celtic are champions, they have shown they can do that.

"They will have confidence they can keep doing that, so we have to show we can, too, and that is a big ask.

"That is where championships are won and lost, not just in single games or over a weekend when one team wins and another loses.

"They are won and lost over a whole season and a long season at that. It takes a great deal and our players have to show they can handle that."

Speaking in the Rangers News, Walter added: "Having not won the league for a number of years, and with the fans expecting us to win it, the players have to prove they have a right to be at the top of league.

"Celtic have been the best side in Scotland over the last few seasons and that is something we have to try and overcome."

Obvious but sensible stuff nonetheless....

We do have a larger number of players not used to success (SPL or otherwise) so we'll need the experience of Smith and the senior players more than ever...

:)

Was thinking about that the other day, who in the first team now has tasted spl success, possibly only barry and hutton?

Mcgregor I wouldn't count, especially when you think when the games start getting to the nitty gritty he's not done the course and distance, Novo and Buffel wouldn't be classed as in the first team IMO as at most Novo would be an impact player off the bench and Buffel hasn't been seen in a 1st team jersey since that last sighting of Lord Lucan.

Going to be an interesting season then as celtic dont have players used to losing and being behind in the league so it will be interesting to see who cracks first. Hopefully walters comments will give our players the kick up the arse that they need. If we can win our next couple of games and then beat celtic at celtic park we could be in one hell of a position. The tims will be crying for strachans head.

The testing programme of games between now and the end of January will need cool heads, on and off the pitch. We have got some experienced players and others used to playing under pressure. The squad will also be tested as injuries and suspensions take their toll. The fans also need to stay behind the team, some parts of games will not always go for us (part of second half v Hearts) and that is when the team needs support from the fans - and not to get on their backs. It would be great to get through to the end of January unbeaten, and its possible if unlikely, but we can all do our part, we are Rangers - We Are The People!!!

Don't count on the points until they are in the bag.

Celtic have dropped points, just as we have. It will be nip 7 tuck throughtout the season, going to final day ... IMO

Make no doubt about it..we will struggle against St Mirren but Im sure we will beat Gretna

And I dont fancy 3 points either when we visit ICT or Motherwell
