But as you already pointed out they seem to have a conveyor belt of talent coming through and are not scared to push them into the first team. Upshot is we are maybe guilty of underestimating Ajax and overestimating us.

Of course we deserve to be there but that doesn’t mean it can’t be acknowledged that it is a level we are not used to playing at.

Sadly, at the minute that is true. In fact it has been true for the vast majority of our participation in the CL. Before this season started we had one 1 of our last 20 games in it.

We really didn’t. Ajax beat Dortmund 7 - 1 over 2 group games last season. They beat Sporting Lisbon 9-3 over 2 group games last season. Ajax are not at the elite level but they are much better than Dortmund or Leipzig or Braga were last year. Yes we can ,and must ,improve but our best will still not be good enough for this level without further serious investment in the playing staff

It’s all relative though. They are good enough to have players worth tens of millions year after year. It’s simply a step up in standard that we are not prepared for.
