NEIL ALEXANDER reckons Rangers' No.1 jersey will be in safe hands - but it has nothing to do with the goalkeeping abilities of him or Allan McGregor.

The Ibrox goalkeepers are preparing to battle it out for a starting slot at the start of the season as Walter Smith prepares to make a major call in which one of the pair will be included in his team in their SPL opener against Falkirk next month.

But Alexander insists the competition is healthy and credits goalkeeping coach Jim Stewart for bringing out the best in them.

"Jim is a terrific coach," explained Alexander. "He works the goalkeeper extremely hard, in fact, sometimes too hard!

"Myself and Allan have basically done double sessions since we started back. We are doing the fitness work with the rest of the players and then Jim is taking us and doing our specialised training so it has been hard going.

"I've been lucky enough to work with him previously in my career and I also remained in contact with him when I was down in England. Jim is always on the other end of the phone if you need advice and he has been a huge influence on my career.

"I'm sure Allan will say the same. You can never stop improving as a professional footballer and every day the pair of us arrive at Murray Park or wherever we are training we know he is going to work us hard and bring us on.

"It's a good thing for the two of us and also for Rangers."

I was surprised Billy Thomson left but Jim seems highly regarded too.

did they ever give the reason for Thomson leaving? Dont remember ever reading it if they did. We are lucky enough to have 2 good goalkeepers at the club and seem to have a good goalkeeping coach as well. If only we were as well covered in other positions.
