Me and one of my mates are flying over to Bournemouth on the friday, back on the sunday. Still not sure what we're doing friday night but it will involve getting hammered no doubt!! :D So if anyone can suggest any decent places to drink in Portsmouth, I think our hotels right next to their stadium.

Cheers AB, just a quick question, how far is Gosport from Portsmouth i.e. how much would it likely to be in a taxi for example?

flying down on half 6 flight glasgow to gatwick on sat morning and back on sunday night, staying in etap straight across from the ground.

madeline's is 13 miles from that hotel according to google maps, so say £25 in a private hire.

Its a ferry across the water, its better to stay pompey side. A lot of pubs will probably shut before the game. I was based there for years and they always shut pubs when big teams came down so be prepared for that, that in no way means it will happen though.

found this on followfollow, seems a good and useful guide

Pubs:

There are 4 main drinking areas in Portsmouth.

Guildhall Walk: In the middle of the City Centre a two minute walk from Portsmouth and Southsea train Station. Guilhall walk is the main nightlife in Portsmouth and comprises one street of boozers. Walkabout, 2 Whetherspoons, Yates, Route 66 Nightclub and numerous other establishments. There is also a Stanley Casino for anyone interested.

Gunwharf: Again a two minute walk from Portsmouth Harbour station. Gunwharf is a bit more upperclass than Guilhall and thus a little more expensive. It has a lot of outlet shopping and is right on the waterfront. There are lots of bars and restraunts. Tiger Tiger is located here and is a good night out as is Bar 38, Slug and Lettuce, Bar Risa etc. If it is sunny then this is the place to be. There is a Grosvener casino here also.

Albert Road: Closest drinking area to Fratton Park. A street full of pubs for the student fraternity. Notable names are the Goose and VA, (cheap beer and food, only 2.00 for a pint in there)Little Johnny Russels(Live entertainment) and the One Eyed Dog. This is also the place to get a curry or a chinese and most of them are good though my personal favourite is the Goa.

Palmerston/Osborne Road: Not quite as big as the others but a good few pubs in these two streets none the less. Kingsleys, Hong Kong Charlies Vodka Bar, Owens and Chicago Rock are all worth visiting. Once again there are numerous Indian/Chinese/any type of food you desire in Osborne road. Again there is a Grovesner Casino down Osborne Road.

Titty Bar: Elegance, in Granada Road Southsea. for anyone that wants to go!

Travel: Portsmouth is practicaly an Island and the traffic is a nightmare especially when the footie is on.. Closest train staion to the ground is Fratton. For the city centre it is Portsmouth and Southsea and for Gunwharf and the Gosport Fery it is Portsmouth Harbour. The train leaves London every half hour and takes around one hour forty minutes. Make sure that you get the fast train as there is a slow train that stops at every stop. The bus service is pretty good and the majority of the buses will take you to the vincinity of Fratton Park. For taxis use Aqua cars a private hire firm , Tel:02392654321 as they are a lot cheaper than flagging a metered cab.

Do you know where this is as I have lived down in Pompey for a year and never knew about it.

Also if anyone wants to know anything about the town, how far places are from certain places I can let them know, the lad who is staying next to the ground is that the Etap Hotel? Lucky for you opposite the ground is a KFC and a McDonalds :D

Gosport is quite a way from Pompey, not majorly but I'd say about a 20 minute drive, there are enough pubs in Pompey tbh, although in Stamshaw there is a pub called the Mother Shipton who claim to be one of the hardest in Britain :D

The guys on the Pompey forum told us to avoid Guildhall Walk as there are major battles there at the weekend. They recommended Gunwharf as a much better option.

Guildhall walk is not bad at all, it is the main clubbing scene in Pompey but there aren't many clubs there, aslong as it's not a Saturday Night or Monday Night you're there then there is rarely any trouble.

Gunwharf is shit, it is the place that Pompey built thinking they are upper class, it's good for a first time visit but gets boring quickly.

Port Solent Boardwalk is a good place to go, it's where most of the Pompey players live, some nice places to eat down there as well.

Southsea isn't the main clubbing area really, Guildhall Walk is, infact the majority of the time it's where you find the Pompey players.

Southsea isn't as popular as Guildhall for clubbing, you actually might find more trouble down Southsea though.
