Derby release Giles Barnes

Giles Barnes has parted company with Derby County after his contract with the Rams was cancelled by mutual consent.

The 21-year-old has seen his promising career blighted by injury with an Achilles problem preventing him from featuring this season.

Barnes made just five appearances in the previous campaign and saw a January loan move to Fulham prove fruitless as he never made it onto the field for the Cottagers due to concerns over his Achilles.

He is now free to find another club but will not be eligible to play again until January when the transfer window reopens.

Unfortunate

Barnes helped the Pride Park outfit secure promotion to the Premier League in 2007 when he stepped off the bench to play a key role in the Championship play-off final victory over West Brom.

But his ongoing battle for fitness has left manager Nigel Clough with little option but to hand him the opportunity to prove his worth elsewhere.

Clough told the club's official website: "We have been in discussions with Giles for a few weeks now and we believe it is in the interests of both the player and the club that he moves on to pursue a new challenge.

"It is unfortunate that his Derby County career has been hampered by injury for the past two years, but Giles is a determined character and we all wish him well in the future."

Might be old news but just noticed it on Sky Sports.

Talented player who's obviously struggled with injuries. I reckon whoever takes a gamble on him, will be rewarded.

When he first broke on to the scene he looked a real talent!

A real shame, a few years ago he was tipped for a big move. It would appear that Derby think that his achilles problem will not stand up to the full time rigours of the league he is in.

Unfortunately with this type of problem it would be a huge gamble for any club to take on.

Had/Has loads of potential but he was desperate to stay in the prem and when it didnt happen he was stuck tbh.

Derby had moved on and now they have Lee Croft, Kris Commons, GAry Teale, Stephen Pearson etc who were all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Hope he gets a team and wouldnt mind us taking a gamble 2 year deal or something but theres no chance of it happening!

If he was that good and there were no concerns over his injury then Derby wouldn't have gotten rid of him.

Can't believe anyone would seriously consider him as a potential Rangers target with an injury history like his <cr>
