Aye it probably is jsut because people compare it to the old ones but to be honest the game felt to me like I could ahve completed it by jsut running about pressing X, the game does everything for you if you want.

Probably because the battles move so fast, it feels like you're just selecting a gear with the paradigm system instead of doing any steering, so to speak.

I liked the combat from XII: it had as much depth as you wanted from it, could be made to run on it's own with whatever priorities the player prefers, but had the advantage of being able to take control of whoever you wanted at any time. Unfortunately Square have a tendency to throw out perfectly good game-play mechanics and keep character names instead!
