I would prefer him to stay but Liverpool and the premiership has put his head in the clouds so we should cash in now...£5m is not alot to ask for a outstanding prospect. They go for more in the Championship

Rangers await increased Liverpool offer for Danny Wilson after rejecting £2m bid

Rangers are waiting to hear back from Liverpool after rejecting the Anfield club's offer for teenage defender Danny Wilson.

Rangers confirmed Liverpool's interest in the 18-year-old almost two months ago and manager Walter Smith has now revealed the Ibrox club turned down a concrete offer.

Smith, who has been linked with a move for Middlesbrough striker Lee Miller, told the Sunday Post: 'We are currently waiting to hear back from Liverpool after we rejected their original £2million offer.'

Wilson has refused the club's attempts to extend his contract, which has one year remaining, and Rangers would receive compensation of just several hundred thousand pounds should he leave next summer.

Rangers expect the centre-back, who made 25 first-team appearances last season, to move on but they are holding out for more money for the Scottish Football Writers' young player of the year.

Rangers will point to other transfer deals for young players in the Barclays Premier League such as Arsenal's £5million purchase of then 17-year-old Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff in 2008.

Some reports claim Manchester United paid Fulham up to £12million for 20-year-old defender Chris Smalling, who had played less first-team games than Wilson when his summer switch was set up in January.

Rangers chief executive Martin Bain has previously admitted that the club rejected approaches for Wilson from two Barclays Premier League clubs in January and more have since made their interest known, with Tottenham strongly linked with a move

He's in the final year of his contract, we play in Scotland, we don't have two of the biggest clubs in England fighting for his signature - we are not going to get anywhere near what Fulham got for Chris Smalling, so he should not be used as an example.

Yes, but Wilson also has Champions League experience.

.....he should have been tied down on a longer contract before a ball was kicked in the 2009/10 season!

He was brought into the side purely as a last resort and likely to have been viewed as just another wee boy previously. Forward planning was needed for your scenario to work.

He was just a wee boy previously but he was always highly thought of...why do you think he trained with the 1st team......

he is currently on the last year of his first professional contract, what should rangers have done to keep him, offered him a jim mclean length contract to tie him down ?

If you had a young player, who you planned to introduce to the first team, you would attempt to tie him down to a longer deal. This was obviously not the case with Wilson.

We should have offered him a decent contract and the assurance that he would be given a chance of playing games for the first team based on merit. To be offered a contract reputedly around £800 a week but with appearance money and to hear the manager the next day say he would be used very sparingly next season would not give me great hope or security. Then the joy about the return of the saviour Webster to the club, the continual presence of McCulloch, improved contract being offered to Broadfoot and the comparison of the deal offered to him must make Wilson wonder if he is really wanted.

Lets leave the presumptions about contracts as we don't know what rangers offered him. Bottom line is Weir, boogie and webster are currently better players than him so he shouldn't be first choice. Although if it was 1st team football he was worried about why go to liverpool ?

Sadly we need to accepot that some players just won't see playing for rangers as the pinacle of there career, wilson is clearly one of them. His head has been turned by interest from liverpool, that's not rangers fault.

well judging by recent madia speculation that there may be a wee bidding war between the pool and tottenham, and with the latest news that sunderland are baulking at the 9 million valuation on huttons head, we should be getting hutton back hear in the deal somehow, dunno how but would be good

It should have been offered a year ago if he was first-team material, but he wasn't, in either respect.

one year into his first contract we should have offered him another one, why ? What had he done to deserve it.....

Whatever got him so many starts in the first team, I would presume. You were the one who said that he was held in such high regard.

If he's greetin to get away..... We should try to sell him to anyone but Liverpool.

Why anyone but Liverpool? If they stump up the asking price and he wants to go then fair enough

He was promoted because Smith was down to the bare bones.

at the start of the season ? as that's when he was in the 1st team squad from.... <cr>

I was talking about getting a start. He had actually been in the squad, unused, from the previous season, he I'm not mistaken. Now Walter rates him at £5m.

I wonder if he has any more gems hidden away who aren't quite good enough for us, but would interest EPL sides if they were given a few starts?

Walter thought he was good enough for us that's why he was in the 1st team squad from 16...he wasn't better than boogie and weir so didn't get a start.

.....or an improved contract.

Back to where we started. I'm out.

Everyone knew Danny Wilson was going to be a great player, even when he was 15-16 years old.

Danny may not have signed a contract at the start of last season either. It looks like he has always wanted to leave at some stage and go and play in the Premiership. With Liverpool and Tottenham interested, he feels that he may not get a better opportunity.

Everytime he wore the Rangers jersey he gave 100%. I wish him all the best and the £3 million we will get for him will come in handy.(Should he decide to leave)
