DUTCH legend Johan Cruyff has told Rangers owner Craig Whyte to FORGET an Atlantic League — and focus on improving their own players.

Whyte has admitted he was working "behind the scenes" on a move to England.

And he also revealed there were other ideas in terms of European leagues — joining up with some of the Nordic countries or the Netherlands.

But three-time European Player of the YearCruyff, 64, said: "You have to decide what you want to achieve if you want to change things.

"In Holland, we have Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord who are normally the top three, in the same way as Rangers and Celtic are always in the top three in Scotland.

"But if they are all playing together one of them would be sixth. How would a club used to consistent success react to that?

"Or if teams from other countries were involved and they finished even further down?

"The other thing for these clubs who speak about these things is it's a lack of respect for their own countries.

"My advice would be to take care of the league you are in and concentrate on raising your own players."

Cruyff also sees a growing problem with clubs crippled by massive debts.

He added: "Control the money. If clubs run into debt, that has to be controlled.

"The minister for sport in every country should be there to safeguard the sport and work for the benefit of it — because in many places football is the biggest thing. Politicians have to take care of it because that will set a good example for the children."

Er Johann! Hello! We're talking about trying to generate money for those big teams outside of the big earning leagues, you fucking fool.

Money would only be generated if people actually wanted to watch the games in this "Atlantic League"

Can't really see that happening tbh

what the fuck does this have to do with him? Who even asked him this question? It would be an an amazing league if it were to happen, with the potential to be bigger than the champions league. Every stadium would be full of a minimum of 40,000 fans at every game and if there was a second tier and cup games it would be incredible. Great player, but not a great thinker. Times have to move on. This is the way to go imo. Cant see the teams from the countries that would be involved being against it either.

I disagree. Fans in Scotland, Holland, Portugal, France, Scandinavia, Belgium, etc. would all watch.

It would be a certainty to generate more TV money for those clubs trapped in countries where big money isn't generated.

Do you think that we really couldn't get more than the £2m or £3m that we get for playing in the SPL?

For it to fail, we'd probably have to get Martin Bain to negotiate a contract where we (and the other clubs) didn't get a turn.

Got to agree with him! I really don't like the thought of an Atlantic league. Nor do I like the thought of joining the Premier League.

Sure Scottish football is in the dumps, but we are passionate about our football and that must count for something! SFA need to make drastic changes to bring fans back to stadiums and make people want to go to the football every Saturday.

The SNP are only going to make things worse though. For over 100 years Scots have gone to games to support their teams and let off some steam while they're at it but the new laws coming in are that of a dictatorship. So frustrating! Really don't think leaving the SPL is the solution, it might earn us more money but that's where football has gone wrong. It's all about the money now.

If only you knew the way we have been treated by the footballing government in our own country.

got to agree times have changed even since it was first proposed over 10 years ago.

listen the top teams from england, spain, germany etc. are always goiing to be making most of the uefa money and could not care a jot about what i call 2nd tier lleagues like holland, scotland etc. so time to go it alone teams coming from portugal.holland, scotland, belguim, and scandanavian countrys to make up the league.estimated target population of 40 million, with a proposed average attendance of 30-35,000. would make it the third largest of all european leagues and should have no problem attracting big television rights it would be a very competitive league of 12 teams ie; RANGERS,CELTIC,PORTO,BENFICA,AJAX,PSV,ANDERLECHT,STANDARD,COPENHAGEN,BRONDBY,GOTHENBURG,ROSENBORG cannot see how it would fail with the technology at our disposal these days only downside is travelling for away supporters.......

Except being an excellent footballer, what has he done to suggest he isnt a fool? Maradona was a better player than him, so was george best, platini, gazza - the majority of these brilliant players are fools.

He helped develop the idea of total football along with Rinus Michels which changed the way football was played.
