The Man Who Saved The Rangers.

Recommended Posts

As The Rangers enter what is the most critical few days of our 140 year history we would like to pay tribute to an unsung hero from our early years in President Mr.George Goudie.

In 1883 the Rangers were on the point of folding completely due to mounting debts but Mr Goudie saved the Club with £30 from his own pocket.

Mr. George Goudie, we salute you sir.

Story in here.

How poignant and relevenat is this wee article ?

Something's just never change.

" That £30 should stand between the club and extinction seems incredible. Yet such was the case in the eighties, as we tell in the following story.

Around a table sat a number of men grave of countenance and puckered brows. " It has come to this," said one, "We must have £30 or we cannot carry on. There is not a farthing in the exchequer. Can someone suggest where the £30 is to come from?" And the man at the top of the table answered , ""We cannot let the club go under without a fight, I shall advance the club £30 - and let us hope for better times."

Those men were the committee of the Rangers Football Club. The Year was 1883. The first doleful speaker was the treasurer, Mr J.B. Ness, the good angel was the president, Mr George Goudie. neither of them lived to see how momentous was the sequel to that quick transition from despair to hope. "

So, that's £29 more than Whyte seems to have put into the club.
