Rangers FC should be proud of our Protestant 'leanings'!

Recommended Posts

So Horse...

You are advocating a belief system for our club which you yourself have chosen to reject ?

Can't speak for Horsey D'Art, but a while back I had a wee thing going with a lady who told me she's an 'ethnic Hindu' - a weegie though, and when I pressed her she told me she loves being part of that Community, that it's an essential part of her character and she enjoys the get togethers and the clothes (which I think look great :Animation44-dont over use: ).

Made me think that although I've left the 'God' thing behind, I'm probably an 'ethnic Presbyterian'.

And I'm very comfortable with Rangers' Protestant heritage, but I don't think I really need to tell you that.

As for Horse, keep on fishing ;)

I have problems Manticore with the term "celebrate our Protestant leanings"...

I fully understand when an atheist says he can respect our Protestant traditions....however I have concerns though when we move on to the active expression of those traditions or that culture without limit or boundaries so to speak.

Particularly when as Horse has done...though perhaps not deliberately....Celtic are held as an expression of Catholicism and therefore that justifies our expression.

A further concern for me would be expressing our Protestant identity in one area and then not in another - for example although we claim to be a Protestant Club the conduct of our guardians for instance was not in keeping with the Protestant ethic. Then we end up looking like a bunch of hypocrites.

I think the point here is that religion isnt that important to most gers fans in association with football, however its mostly brought up only in defence of the constant attacks on it by others. I dont go to church or really care for religion in general, but im not gonna sit back and watch others lambast and discriminate against all things Rangers / protestant / british. This is when you here fans talk of religion and rightly voicing their pride and passion. If the question is asked then yes im proud to say im protestant and so should rangers of their history and present day affiliations. The same goes for Celtic, they have made no secret of their connections with catholicism and why should they. The problem arises because the same attitudes are not applied when it comes to things non catholic, and basically we just wont have it. As long as we always show our passion and love for all things Rangers / protestant / British in a way that doesnt overtly or blatantly abuse or offend any other religion or group then we should be as proud and loud as can be.

I'M A PROTESTANT

"I'm an Atheist.."

You can't be both FFS.

But you can be part of a Protestant Community and be an Atheíst....

Surely it would then be a secular community?

100% my feelings also. Good post. (tu)

I think the club is responsible for this nonsense that we shouldn't LINK Rangers with Protestantism! It's got to the point were no-one at Rangers FC will even mention the word Protestant!!!

We should be rejoicing our links with Protestanism, and rejoicing our links with the Orange Walks - NO NEED TO BE ASHAMED OF EITHER!!! :Edwinb2:

My take on it is that Rangers weren't formed as a Protestant club - our leanings were a reaction to the Tarriers across the City, people said "if they're proud to be Tims, then why shouldn't we be proud of our religion, and why shouldn't WE have a team..."!

We should rejoice in our Protestant Leanings - but we aren't exclusively a Proddie team, there's plenty of the Asian and Jewish Faiths that follow Rangers (probably because of our 'supposed' link to the Tory Party...)

Everyone is welcome at our great club - WE AREN'T SECTARIAN!!! :pipegreen:

So because we were formed first we cannot react to another teams, religious leanings and their magnet for the Catholics. Rangers becoming a club with a mainly protestant following was reactionary to Celtic being founded.

"I'm an Atheist.."

You can't be both FFS.

But you can be part of a Protestant Community and be an Atheíst....

Surely it would then be a secular community?

Depends on how that Community defines itself really?

Religions are much more than spiritual/ 'god' type beliefs, they are belief systems. Everybody subscribing to religions, well with a few exceptions, pick and choose which of the beliefs/ rules they subscribe to.

I've known plenty of Jews who love a bacon butty and RCs who carry a pack of three when they go out on the pull....

Yes that kind of hypocrisy is one of the things I detest about religion.

Firstly – there were Protestant Schools in the past - a quick browse in a search engine like yahoo etc will tell you so…

Secondly, unlike Bin PISH I will defend my threads, but if my opinions are proven wrong then I’ll hold up my hand and say so - that SCABBY CUNT won’t even defend his own POV (here’s the link: http://forum.rangersmedia.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=30636 from the debating forum) but he’ll go on other threads with his usual “Gies nane o yir pesh†routine… if he used a shortcut function for that phrase he’d save himself typing 50% of his total crappy output… Poor flounder still thinks the world is flat instead of round! Of course the world isn’t EXACTLY round, that’s just his IQ…

o

Poor BinPISH had a terrifying phone call yesterday… someone called offering him a job!!! :barf:

Now to my thread – nobody has said anything to make me change my mind and as others have said (thanks ‘Dummiesoot’ and ‘Stevenage Bear’ for clarifying things a bit - work and charity commitments mean my time is mostly fill these days) you CAN be proud of your Protestant heritage and be an Athiest – if only life were so simple that you could say “I’m an Atheist†and that’d keep things clear! I’m proud to say I’m a Protestant only because I’m NOT ashamed of it – if you can’t work that out then I’ve no intention of repeating it! Unless someone inputs something new (or leftfield) to this thread I’ll be leaving it – you either understand what I’m saying or you don’t (want to)!

As far as Rangers’ history is concerned any writing that has real knowledge of our club (Robert McElroy etc) will state clearly that it wasn’t until the RC nature of Celtic FC became clear, that people (who were being attracted to the new craze of football) looking for a club that best suited their traditions, found Rangers gradually assumed that role! The people of Scotland have (in the past) been aware of the cancerous nature of Oirish Catholicism and naturally Rangers gained as our roots became more settled. Had Queen’s Park (who were initially THE big club in Scotland, even before The Old Firm) left their ‘amateur’ status behind, then most of us would likely be ‘following’ them!!!!

Another point to remember is that because more and more Irish Roman Catholics adopted CFC as ‘their club’, there was naturally a shortage of them supporting Rangers; all the factors pushed us towards having a Protestant identity! Shipyards played a big part too… Jews and (latterly) the Asian community also started supporting Rangers in a big way for the simple reason that our ‘identity’ was one of the ‘Protestant Work Ethic’ while the Tims had (still have) one of griping about Oppression, plus of course our ‘supposed’ Conservative Party leanings…

For those reasons I’m more than happy to state that we are ‘mainly’ a Protestant Club and I’m PROUD of that – to deny that would be to lie and I ain’t no liar!!! Jesus H Christ, I’ve even heard (from RC’s mainly) that being a Protestant and a Communist is a contradiction… ffs – people love pigeon holes… The things that make Rangers so great are our diversity, we don’t need the comfort of ‘sameness’ unlike ‘The Bjorg’ (just like the Star Trek species…) that all sing from the same hymn sheet, we have diversity and that’s (just like evolution) what makes us superior… We have the strength (and faith) to allow opposing opinions… :pipegreen:

Very admiral...although like the intellectually challenged one you seem to feel the need to post in a different style from everyone else. Why do use this more difficult to read font?

...you CAN be proud of your Protestant heritage and be an Athiest "

You can.

if only life were so simple that you could say “I’m an Atheist†and that’d keep things clear! I’m proud to say I’m a Protestant only because I’m NOT ashamed of it " if you can’t work that out then I’ve no intention of repeating it!

Well don't but the fact remains you are not a Protestant if you are an atheist, obviously. You may be from a Protestant background but that is different.

Jesus H Christ,

You *are* an atheist?

I’ve even heard (from RC’s mainly) that being a Protestant and a Communist is a contradiction…

They probably mean Marxist.

Firstly 'the font' - well to my mind i always use that one as it looks compact and good, I THINK it's easier to read and understand! My opinion and my choice. Interesting if RM took a straw poll with a look at all the different fonts, all i will say is i've been using that font for at least the last 8 or 9 yrs and i've noticed more and more folk using it...

I can't be a Protestant and a Atheist... In simple terms that may be right (IT IS) but (as i've said) things aren't simple and i'm gonna keep on saying i'm a Proud Proddie! So bugger simplicity - it's a complex world! :pipegreen:

Jesus H Christ - are you really suggesting i'm not entitled to use his name because i'm a Atheist, i'll try and remember that if a car runs over my foot!!

Socialist - Communist - they all mean the same to me, only different stages of the Marxist outlook, so i don't understand your meaning there, feel free to expand on it...

Youre spot on mate, i continually support this point of view also. Well that’s me for the day – now I plan to do the garden for my local Protestant Church (which I attend btw – a quick explanation of that - I believe in Good, not God, but mainly because my Mother was religious – it’s my way of getting near her now she’s brown bread) – HEY, life’s FULL OF CONTRADICTIONS! Basic Dialectics… if the left leg didn’t contradict the right we’d all stay still – bit like some peoples brains… :pipegreen:

Exactly mate!!! (tu)

We don't shit in anyone else's garden, so they'd better not shit in ours!!! :2g:

Eveyone wants to criticise Scottish/Ulster Protestantism, yet they when faced with criticism of Roman Catholicism they say "we don't have to defend our beliefs, it's our FAITH"...

I'm off now - thanks for that 'lancedeangers1!! (tu)

As for the 'Jesus H Christ'...just odd that an atheist would use that, same as calling yourself a Protestant ;)

Marx said that religion was the opiate of the masses...if you are a Marxist, then you are also an atheist. I don't think that automatically applies to communists and definately not to socialists.

I do think so - but then like 'the font question' this is just a matter of perspective. I'd say Communism is a logical extention of Marxism, and that Socialism is the seed of Communism... :pipegreen:

Humans aren't always 100% logical - the way i see it is that my brain (Marxist/Socialist/Communist) and my heart (Morality) sometimes pull me in different directions, and as i said about my going to church DIALECTICS are the driving force to social change (Evolotion & Revolution)! :bouncy:

Bit like that wee bouncy chap, if one group of muscles didn't work in contradiction with another, he wouldn't be doing the bouncy!!!!

I guess 'Briton' what i'm trying to say here is that things aren't 'always' black and white...

or red and blue... ;)
