Motherwell manager Mark McGhee is looking to bring former Rangers midfielder Bob Malcolm back to The SPL.

McGhee reckons the only way he could bring Malcolm to the club is if Derby County cancel the player's contract and allow him to move as a free agent.

McGhee is keen to bring in a central defender before the transfer window closes at midnight on Thursday.

McGhee told setantasports.com: “We are still hopeful that can happen, but it is proving to be a slow process. We are looking at the midfield area and, if possible, a centre-forward.

“I’m looking to get something done.â€

McGhee told setantasports.com that despite having a very good campaign so far, his side can match Rangers and Celtic on their day, but it will be a different story at the end of the season as to where they will finish.

“We would like to beat the Old Firm,†McGhee told setantasports.com. “We believe we can match them and we have done well in the games against the Old Firm this season, even though we haven’t won any.

“We believe given a little bit of luck and better finishing in particular, we could beat them. But it’s the teams round about us are the teams who we are competing with.

“We are not going to finish above Celtic or Rangers, but we hope to finish above Dundee United and these other teams.â€
