Doctor's record gave me hope for recovery, admits Rangers injury victim Steven Naismith

May 29 2008 By Chris Roberts

RANGERS crock Steven Naismith feared he might never kick a ball again - until he did his homework on Dr Richard Steadman.

The Ibrox striker was a broken man when he learned he had sustained cruciate knee ligament but soon had his spirits lifted when he was put in the care of the Colorado-based knee specialist.

Naismith went under the knife at the beginning of the week and is now on the long road to recovery thanks to Steadman.

He is the miracle worker who put Celtic defender John Kennedy back on the football field and can also count the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo, Alan Shearer, Michael Owen and Roy Keane among his clients.

Having read that glittering list of names it is no wonder the 21-year-old Ibrox starlet is looking to the future with more optimism.

Naismith said: "When I got my injury I spoke to Durranty about it because he suffered the same thing. His injury was obviously much worse but he was able to give me advice.

"Barry Ferguson and Kevin Thomson have also had knee surgery in the past so I talked to them as well. Once I heard what everyone had to say it seemed I was in better shape than any of them were at this stage and that's encouraging from my point of view.

"Of course every injury is different and I'll need to take this one on its own merits but I'm confident I'll make a full recovery.

"When I went to see the surgeon he told me whom he had operated on and when you look them up most have come back to play normally.

"The likes of Roy Keane, Bolo Zenden and Wes Brown all saw the same doctor and recovered well.

"I had a good feeling before the operation and now it's over I just want to rebuild my career and hopefully contribute for Rangers."

The former Kilmarnock player is desperate to start putting in the hours in the gym as he builds up his strength.

Naismith said: "When I got hurt we knew I had done my ACL but we didn't know if I had done anymore damage to it until the surgeon opened me up.

"Thankfully I hadn't and the operation went as well as it could have. Now I'm out for anything up to a year. I'm waiting for my wounds to heal then we'll take things from there.

"The next step will be to get straight back into exercising again. At the moment I'm seeing the physio a couple of times a week but things will get more intense over the summer."

To be honest, I still don't know why the wee man stayed on after that disgraceful stamp from the St Johnstone player.

He should have came off then as he looked badly injured at that point. We can only hope the lad makes a full recovery.

The same thing happened with McGreggor. I know it's with hindsight but both should have come off straight away.

Agreed. This is where players need to try and appreciate the long term effects of trying to play on with injuries. I can understand their disappointment and frustration in not being able to play (or having to come off) but as we've seen with Ferguson, it's just not worth it in the long run.

 I really rate the fella and it would be quality to see him and Fleck become regulars in the same team!! I hope he comes back as good as he was before the injury, cos he is a talent!

All the best to him, it looked like an awful injury and has since proved to be. Showed in glimpses the real ability he has, terrible timing as he was just starting to settle into the club I felt.
