Why do Celtic fans call us Huns?

With the recent Lennon and Novo controversy I have taken the time to have a good read at the posts on Kerrydale street. They all say h*** like it rolls off the bk of their toungues. Like they actually mean it and don't really see it as an insult. Its just they way it is. We don't call them Tims like they call us h***. My Celtic minded friends have no idea of the answer to this question either. Yet they continue to call the Rangers supports 'h***'.

I though h*** were from China? Artilla the h** etc..... Then sects split off into Europe. Whatever.

The British pilots called the enemy h*** in WW1.

Can anyone explain?

Another myth of Tims being equal to them saying h*** when it's not (tu)

It's them trying to call us fascist.

However, their choice of word is laughable seeing as they are the ones who worship a country who harboured the real h***, fuelled their U-Boats and made sure the lights in the Tatty Land were left on overnight to guide the German Bombers into Britain.

So if anyone is a h** it is one who supports the Tatty Land.

Not sure when it changed over but my old man told me before he died that when he was a regular in the late 60's, early 70's Celtic were knwn as the h*** and that he could remember standing at the Piggery singing "Go home ya h***" to the Celtic fans.

He was never sure of the origin or when it changed though.

My theory is that, as has been pointed out, the word h** has long been connected to the Germans during the war and on the basis of the Irish Republican support of the Germans during the war, both active and inactive, its entirely possible the word h** was given to the Tims as a slant on their Irish status. As far as when it changed to us, my best guess would be during the period when "some" of our supporters were heavily connected to gangs commonly known as "Nazi" groups and its just stuck from there. All of this last paragraph is pure supposition on my part though (tu)

I remember singing that to them as well in the 60s and early 70s. but I remember both sets of supporters singing it then. It was usually sung to the fans drifting away when they,re team ( them or us ) was being beaten.

I think they just kept it going as they didn,t have the intellect or vocabulary to come up with anything original and did what they are famous for ie stealing other peoples songs, chants etc and passing them off as theirs.

Plus of course it was easier to spell

I guess it doesn't really matter where the word came from the only thing that matters is the meaning.

h** = Rangers supporter/Protestant

Tim = Celtic supporter

The only difference between the two words is when used in a derogatory manner one is sectarian and the other is not.

Wrong.

Celtic fans refer to themselves as Tims. We don't refer to ourselves as h***. And we most certainly do not like being referred to as such.

See the Admin on here... perhaps they may want to include words that OFFEND US (like h**) instead of words that offend those tramps (Like TA*G) first and foremost.

Anyone who calls me a h** gets a warning never to use that word in my presence again... failing to heid that warning leads to a smack in the mouth. I doubt Timmy gets so offended over the word Tim.

Can't quite believe what I'm seeing with this swear filter on here now. Shocking.

h** isn't sectarian, but I think it's a sort of general term that English speaking people use when referring to the 'enemy' or some other kind of 'other' group. Apparently the term h** came to be applied to us when our fans rioted after a game with Newcastle years and years ago, and some paper used the term to describe us. The terrorists started calling us that and it stuck.

That's what I heard anyway.

You heard wrong.

The reason they refer to us as h*** is because they feel we are a right wing, fascist support akin to Hitler or other extremists.

If you are happy with that and cool with passing it off as being the same as Tim then so mote it be.

h** wasn't sectarian but I would argue that it has now become sectarian since celtc fans call Hertz fans 'cousin of h**' and Dundee fans 'mini h***'. Both protestant teams where their derby rivals are catholic teams. Do celtc fans call Hibs and DUFC fans h***? No, therefore it's the protestant angle they're using.

the version my dad and a few others told me was this ......

we refered to the timmies as h*** in the period after the war due to their support of the Germans/Nazis during the WW's ....

somewhere along the line they switched the term h*** over to us due to our allegiance to the Queen and the fact the Royal Family actually has German ancestory.

No idea if this is right though

We know they call themselves Tims and we do not calls ourselves h**, I am curious however, why are you offended when someone calls you a h**?

I can't say I'm overly bothered, maybe alittle disturbed as they might be calling me a Protestant which I am not but whenever someone has called me it I simply correct them and tell them I am a Rangers supporter and religion has nothing to do with that.

h** isn't sectarian in the way Fenian wasn't sectarian. If we had to stop using that term, then h** should go the same way.

I remember a song we used to sing where they were the h**, anyone remember the lines....'If I had a Tommy Gun, I'd shoot every .......... h**'

No pope, priests or holy water.

No Home Rule for Ireland.

If I had a Tommy Gun,

I'd shoot every fenian h**,

Just for walking on The Queen's Highway.

Probably best not to revive that one ;)
