A Rangers supporter found guilty of assaulting Celtic coach Neil Lennon is to appeal against his conviction.

David Whitelaw, 47, and his co-accused Jeffrey Carrigan, 43, were sentenced last month to two years in jail for the attack hours after an Old Firm match.

Sheriff Martin Jones told the pair their actions were "vicious, brutal and cowardly".

Whitelaw has now lodged his intention to appeal at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The attack took place in Ashton Lane in Glasgow's west end, hours after Rangers defeated Celtic 4-2 in the opening Old Firm game of the season.

Carrigan and Whitelaw, both from Knightswood in Glasgow, had told the court that they were Rangers fans.

Previous convictions

A jury at Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that they punched the former player to the ground and repeatedly kicked him on the head and body as he lay unconscious.

The pair were cleared of an allegation that the attack on 1 September last year was aggravated by religious prejudice.

After they were convicted, the court heard that Whitelaw had 16 previous convictions and was jailed for six years in 1993 for drug offences.

Carrigan, who had eight previous convictions, was jailed for five years in 2003 for drug dealing.

BBC Scotland's Ceefax service has this news up with alacrity, currently on page 164. Of course, BBC Scotland Ceefax and other BBC Scotland news/sports outlets neglected to mention 3 Sellik supporters arrested for Sectarian Breach of the Peace at Inverness on Sunday.

Remember, sectarianism and bigotry in west central Scotland is very much a one way street.
