Child footballers banned from reading results

Football Association laws dictate that from this season, the results of matches between children aged seven and eight must not be published, league tables must not be kept and prizes must not be given out.

Some local associations have chosen to extend the regulations even further, it has emerged, banning league tables and trophies for 9, 10 and 11-year olds as well.

Scott Ager, who last season managed Priory Parkside under-9s 'A' team in Huntingdon, was sharply reprimanded after declaring that his team had won the league and having them photographed with a trophy by their local newspaper.

Mr Ager said: "I find it bizarre. It seems to me to work against talented players, as the teams who may lose heavily are likely to be ones with players who just play for a bit of fun. It is very frustrating. Kids put all this effort in but there is no reward.

"All the other managers in the league acknowledged that we had been the best team as we had won the most games. Football is our national sport, yet there are some strange rules around it."

A spokesman for Hunts FA said: "We were very angry. We do not allow competitive leagues until after under-11s. Mr Ager was chastened very severely and eventually left his club."

What the hell are they trying to do to this country's youngsters? <cr>

This is an American and Canadian idea, "everyone's a winner" pish.

I remember my U9's team finishing bottom of the league and getting hammered every week, and it made us play more, work harder and train more seriously in order to get away from the embarrassment of finishing bottom. Worked wonders.

may it not be so that the skills of the young kids are developed first as opposed to focusing on winning the league by any means? could be a good move so that the focus is on trying different skills and passing, as opposed to what used to happen to my team, everyone give the ball to the kid whos 2 feet taller than the rest and will batter his way through the opposition. that just doesnt help 7 and 8 year olds. let the competition start later, let them develop skills.

From coaching under 7's, I can tell you that this is a complete waste of time, and is implemented all over the UK so that weaker teams are still "winners". Even though the majority either don't know/care anyway, or still keep them.

That's retarded. When I used to play I loved checking the newspapers to see our results and league table printed. Admittedly my team was usual a top half team, so it was not that bad, but still, it's a silly idea.

This is crazy. Kids have to learn at somepoint that you can't win all the time. Life is like that. I remember hearing a while back that some leagues reset the score at half time if the lead is over 4 or something. That's not what sport is about. Unfortunately youth sport seems to be going more along the lines of every ones a winner. Vince Lombardis famous quote shows what i think -

If it doesn't matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?
