Someone high up at the paper could have rubbished the story after reading it and wanted to keep the reputation damage of such a poor story, at a minimum. I isn't hard to see now that Adam being sold was the best thing for himself and the club. If he stayed at Rangers he was never going to command a fee anywhere near £10M.
