ForeverBlue_Since91 2,895
As Rangers plead to retain their SPL status, Leyton Orient chief executive Matt Porter says there's no way SPL chairmen will vote for the Gers demotion. Have you ever seen a turkey vote for Christmas? No, me either. So don't expect to see the 11 other member clubs of the Scottish Premier League vote Glasgow Rangers out of their gang when the 'newco' taking over at the crisis-hit Scottish giant is formed. Fans are right to cry foul over what has happened at Ibrox. My chairman Barry Hearn has long branded clubs going in to administration as cheats and called for them to be automatically relegated - and he's right. Signing someone on terms you can't afford to meet but then still utilising their services is not on. It's unfair on your rivals, and ultimately in the long term, on your supporters. It gains you advantages you should not be receiving at the expense of those doing things the right way. Put yourself in these chairmen's shoes. They're not exactly playing to packed houses each week or turning international stars away in the droves. But look at the dilemma faced by the chairmen of the SPL clubs. Rangers bring them guaranteed big pay days every year and are one half of a pairing on which the vast majority of commercial revenue spent on Scottish football is aimed. Put yourself in these chairmen's shoes. They're not exactly playing to packed houses each week or turning international stars away in the droves. Instead they're picking up journeymen players, often on salaries many League One players would turn their noses up at, and scrimping and saving to make ends meet themselves. Their threadbare budgets would be decimated by the loss of Rangers fixtures and the sponsors and TV revenue they bring with them. Even the most dyed-in the wool Celtic fan would surely admit to relishing a season without the Old Firm derbies a lot less than he otherwise would. It will gall them to vote Rangers 'newco' straight in the SPL. It will go against everything they stand for as guardians of the sporting integrity of Scottish football, and it will guarantee them an inbox full of 'Outraged of Galashiels' emails. But they have no choice in the matter. Their beloved yet beleagured league can't afford to lose one of its prized assets, however irresponsible they may have been. Even the most dyed-in the wool Celtic fan would surely admit to relishing a season without the Old Firm derbies a lot less than he otherwise would, and on a sporting level, how much interest would there be in a league where the top team could have half as many points again as its closest rival? In generations past the Scottish leagues have been breeding grounds for players and managers who have revolutionised the game around the world and whilst that impact may be lessening on an almost annual basis, it would be the footballing equivalent of shooting themselves in the foot if they were to deny Rangers their top-tier status. It won't be a proud moment in football history, but it won't take long for the mass media and general fan in the street to put the issue to one side and concentrate on the game, and frankly the sooner that happens the better. Thommo 708
He should be concentrating on trying to help his shitey wee club to achieve a better league position rather than narrowly avoiding relegation, instead of commenting on matters that have fuck all to do with him.
