Glasgow Rangers Supporters Club In Corby

Sadly demolished but was astonished to see that at it's peak it had more than 1500 members! that's some going considering it's in Corby.

The former Glasgow Rangers supporters club in Corby – which once boasted more than 1,500 members – has been demolished.

The Rockingham Road club was knocked down on Friday 23rd January after having closed its doors in February 2013 when membership had dwindled to a little more than 200.

Housing firm Westleigh Homes was granted planning permission to build 16 homes and eight flats at the site last year.

Jimmy White Jr visited the site on Monday afternoon on the hunt for a souvenir.

His dad, Jimmy White Sr, who died a few years ago, was one of the founding members of the club.

Mr White said: “I couldn’t have been more than six or seven when it was set up.

“It was a big part of my life and I was the first junior member the club appointed.

“I used to come here with my dad when I was a kid and later I was on the committee for 10 years.

“It’s a bit soul-destroying to see what’s happened because it was a very good club at its peak.

“That’s progress I suppose.”

Mr White said that in its glory days, the club would take two coach-loads of fans from Corby to Scotland for Rangers’ home games, and sometimes more for bigger matches.

The club closed its doors in early 2013 after struggling with financial problems for a number of months.

A spokesman for Westleigh Developments said: “Work on site will commence next week. We will start work on roads and sewers, this will take approximately eight weeks.”

This is a shame my mum lives 10 miles away from Corby. Remember going to the club to watch a European game one night a few years back whilst down visiting. Fantastic wee club lots of memorabilia and a big photo of the Queen in a Rangers top. Told the old man behind the bar I was from Stranraer and turned out he was to, started buying me drinks and it turned in to a big sash bash. A few of the members sorted me out a taxi and got me home after it as I'm not familiar with the area. Fantastic night!

During the middle of the last century many Scots migrated to Corby to work in the steel plants in that area, particularly Stewarts & Lloyds a company that specialised in the manufacture of steel tubes for the oil and gas industry.

Unfortunately these works, like the ones in Lanarkshire, no longer exist now and as a consequence the Corby Rangers Supporters Club would have lost it,s main source of membership.

Does anyone else find this slightly worrying? Hopefully this isn't a sign of bigger things!

I don't think that the Corby Rangers Supporters Club should be used as an indication for any potential decline in the number of supporters we have for the reasons I've given above.
Just remember the support we took to Manchester. :21:

Visit Corby many times for work and went to the club a couple of times to watch midweek matches a few years back. Unfortunately was on its way out and a bit rundown by then but still a cracking atmosphere. Think it was probably to do with people just not being able to afford to go as much after the credit crunch. Also heard they were offered a fortune by builders for the land some years before this and knocked it back.

Had some fantastic times in there. Helicopter Sunday being the most memorable will never forget that day really miss the place. All though there has been a few Rangers nights in the white heart pub the most recent we had none other than bob Malcom ftp down lol also have the odd loyalist night in the Viking club. There is still a massive Rangers support in the town.

Take it the pubs you listed above are bear friendly then? Just in case I find myself in Corby again and we're playing. Thought you had a cracking wee club in Corby when I visited, it's a shame.
