Rangers boss won’t be held to ransom . . .

true Lafferty cant be worth 5 mill

forgot about Faye he will surely go as well

WALTER SMITH won't be paying over the odds for Rangers' summer transfer targets.

The Ibrox boss has money to spend, but he will not become involved in any bidding wars.

Smith is refusing to meet Burnley's £5m valuation of Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty. And his pursuit of Steve Davis and Kenny Miller may founder for the same reason.

Smith is keen to have all three on board. He is a major fan of Lafferty and believes he would make a big impression as the main striker.

But Rangers consider around £3m a more realistic price for the 20-year-old.

Derby are willing to sell Scotland striker Miller - but for the right price. Adam Pearson, the Derby chairman, has dismissed suggestions there is a £1.6m buy-out clause in Miller's contract, but admits the former Rangers and Celtic player is available for a suitable offer.

He said: "It's nonsense.

We've invested a lot of time and money into Kenny so the deal would have to be right for Derby County.

"There's no financial reason for us to sell but, if Kenny wants to go to Rangers and the fee is right, we'll do a deal.

"We've heard nothing from Rangers. We've heard all the speculation and comments, which makes you think there may be something in it, but unless Rangers make a move it's still all speculation."

It's understood Smith also has reservations about parting with £3m for midfielder Davis, who spent the last six months on loan from Fulham.

Newcastle, Blackburn, West Ham and Middlesbrough are all considering moving for the Northern Ireland player.

He is keen to sign for Rangers, but that move could depend on whether Fulham still want to land striker Daniel Cousin.

The Gabon international's agent, Willie McKay, said: "I would expect Daniel to leave Rangers this summer and he is still very interested in England.

"He was disappointed when the move to Fulham in January was blocked, but he showed what a real professional he was by returning to Rangers and scoring a few important goals for them.

"He would love the chance to play in the Premier League and there is interest from a number of clubs."

The money Rangers banked during the successful European campaign will be boosted by the sale of flop Filip Sebo to the French minnows Valenciennes for £1m.

If Cousin, Brahim Hemdani and Thomas Buffel also are moved on, that would free around £4m in wages. Further moves for Alan Gow, Graeme Smith and Amdy Faye could supplement that.

There is a suggestion Rangers may give Belgian international Buffel a free transfer to get him off the wage bill.

Buffel has a year left on his contract. Part of his £2.4m signing from Feyenoord in 2005 was to include a further £250,000 when he played 100 games, but he fell 14 short of that.

Rangers also have been linked with two wide left players - Middlesbrough's Adam Johnson, 20, and their former winger, Peter Lovenkrands.

Almost exactly two years ago, the Dane quit Rangers on a Bosman for Schalke, where he reputedly signed for £32,000-a-week.

Two things puzzle me from that article.

If Cousin, Brahim Hemdani and Thomas Buffel also are moved on, that would free around £4m in wages. Further moves for Alan Gow, Graeme Smith and Amdy Faye could supplement that.

Faye is on loan, so FFS we don't need to "move" him, he'll be off anyway.

Nonsense, it's already came out the horses mouth that there is NO clause there!

Not true mate...

"29/05/08 11:09 Rangers have targeted highly-rated Middlesbrough youngster Adam Johnson to inject extra width and flair into Walter Smith's squad for next season. The Ibrox club is thought to have made an enquiry to ascertain the left winger's situation as they seek to cover the long-term absences of Steven Naismith and Chris Burke.

There is a lot of fabrication with the actual report, in fact the majority of it to be honest but also some truth I think, again not through actual journalism just pure laziness by looking at other papers and old speculation!

I believe Lafferty, Davis and Johnson are probably on Walter's wish list. Totally forgot about Faye being on loan to us and this suggestion that we use him is pure laziness, all the rubbish about Miller I think is just that and is never going to happen. Cousin leaving will probably happen and due to his attitude at times the sooner the better as I get the feeling he can/could cause dissent in the dressing room etc. Hemdani, Buffle and Gow we should insist on some sort of fee for, but these weird regulations about being in the last year of contract etc when it comes to Buffle and Hemdani might actually be a factor which hasn't been considered and again lazy journalism with regards to the article.

Lovenkrands???? This is a new one on me and this reeks again of lazy journalism where articles last year had us linked with him etc.
