Robinson Has Necessary Experience

WRITTEN BY RANGERS FOOTBALL CLUB

RANGERS secured the signing of English goalkeeper Lee Robinson this week after a brief trial with the club and Ally McCoist feels that he will bring vital experience to the squad with Cammy Bell missing through injury.

Ally McCoist was speaking to rangers.co.uk in the build up to Saturday's game against Queen of the South and said: "With the injury to Cammy picked up and the question mark over his fitness the next two weeks are going to be very important for him.

"We couldn't take the chance of not having cover should Steve get injured and we felt that it wouldn't have been fair on young Robbie and Liam the two younger goalkeepers, so we felt we had to bring somebody in."

The 28-year-old shotstopper started his career in the Murray Park youth ranks, playing alongside the likes of Steven Smith and Ross McCormack, and with Bell currently injured his decision to return to the Light Blues has pleased McCoist.

He said: "Lee had a terrific season last year at Raith Rovers then he went over to Sweden and played at Queen of the South also. He has really good experience and has been here before, so he knows the club and the people already - so it seemed a no brainer really."

After making just one first-team substitute appearance against Hearts on 7 May 2006 at Ibrox, Robinson left Rangers in the summer of 2009, but McCoist says he is signing a better player than the one who left as a youngster.

He added: "Lee is another lad who has left here previously and gone away and matured. He has a really good and healthy working relationship with Jim Stewart which was also a key part of why we signed him."

So...what you do is ,as a youth, start out at Rangers...then go away to another club..gain experience...then come back..mmm...sounds silly to me but what the hec to i know

start at Rangers, go to another club, come back and idle away in the reserves for years despite regular sub-par performances from the player in your position who will always play in the first 11. McCoist (and Smith before him) have wrecked too many youth prospects at Rangers (not the way Pacific Shelf do)

Liam Kelly is one of the younger keepers he talks about it "not being fair" to play - isn't he 19? - and will be 20 at the end of January? McCoist scored 23 goals during the 1980-81 season for St Johnstone. He would have been what - 17 or 18 at the time?

The chance to progress was given to Ally - and he took it - and yet he doesn't want to give others the same chance he had.
