Was it not Doug Ballie who played a bit at centre half just before Ronnie nailed the spot?, I seem to have a very faint memory of him playing there.

Your dead right. Doug Baillie followed Paterson, and for a short while was the regular centre half. Ronnie MacKinnon came through from the reserves and quickly took over from Bailie. I started going to matches at that time (while still at school - Govan High) and particularly followed Ronnie as he was a local Govan lad. As I recall he played for Benburb, before signing for us. I'm guessing he wasn't in the reserves for very long, but it's a while back (1962/1963-ish), and the old memory bank isn't as good these days

Hi guys, just a quick message to say that I won't be uploading any videos for the foreseeable future.

I have always kept my private life, and that of my familys, exactly that - private.
What I will say though, is that my wife hasn't been keeping great, that's why I've not made many videos this last couple of months or so.
There has been some games recently I haven't even seen, let alone make a video of.
And unfortunately the news we got this week wasn't what we were wanting, so this is just going to intensify.

So all my time, effort and energy will be going towards caring for her for now.

I know some of you like these videos, and are grateful for them, but I hope yous understand.  Who knows, I might post one out of the blue, but they'll be rare for the foreseeable.

    Cheers
    Scott

    Best wishes mate. take care.......

Game was harder, and tougher then, less athletic, much heavier ball.

Watching games before the mid sixties my impression is it took more time to work the ball from one end to the other, so less need to pack the midfields. Obviously the reason fast wingers thrived and were the best football players. You seldom see old fashioned defenders overlapping with the wingers, or playing one/twos either. More long ball tactics then too.

Nowadays it's all about defending, controlling and building from a busy midfield.

Think I first became aware of 'overlapping fullbacks' in the mid-60s but the midfield was still pretty much long ball, or at least get it straight down the park -  none of this retain possession in midfield and recycling from one side to the other.

Surely it's 2-3-5,seem to remember that as a lad. RB,LB,RH,CH,LH,OR,IR,CF,IL,OL.

I remember reading a coaching book from the '50s (decade I was born in) that referred to the 'classic WM' formation.

    I read this over 50 years ago, so can't recall the exact wording , but it went along the following lines;

the W would give you 3 (defenders as in the opening post) then 2 (halfbacks?)

the M would give 2 (inside forwards?) then 3 (2 wingers and the centre forward).

Happy to add to the general confusion on tactics from 60- 70 years ago.....

  5. Didn't know about the Old Firm record, but I saw enough of Slim Jim in the early sixties to be absolutely convinced he was the best footballer to wear our jersey. He was simply up there at the top of the pile back in the day. Difficult for an old codger to compare the best then with the so-called superstars of today, but I'm convinced he would be up there. It's all about personal opinions of course.

And he had that gallous swagger as well, just glorious.,...

Unfortunately was not old enough to see him play.  But he was captain and mainstay in the early 60s Rangers team that I believe was probably the greatest Rangers team ever.

    R.I.P.

Yup, first Rangers captain I watched and he oozed class both on and off the pitch. That team was something special, as you say, possibly the greatest Rangers team ever.

    RIP captain.

  7. I agree with the OP's comments in general, but  I've also seen (Daily Mai?) comment that it was a must win game for Rodgers, possibly after their less than stellar transfer window. I can see that might be the case.

Maybe, there's less between us and them than some folks are suggesting?

Doubt they will improve from Sunday, but we will.

  8. Don't know if it was a Wallace or a Waddell plan, but I'm sure that Doddie was sent on to hassle Franz Beckenbauer as he was their playmaker - almost like an NFL Q/back. He was in snapping around his ankles all of the game at Ibrox.

I have a sweet memory of the 'kaiser' hoofing it into the main stand in the semi at Ibrox as Alex snapped around him, giving him no time to spread the play. Great wee player.

2 years late half that Bayern team were in the team that won the World Cup in Germany - how good were we then?

  9. Anyone remember 'Foul' from the early 70s? They focussed on hard/dirty players as I recall plus they a couple of regular funny articles - eg Foul of the week, stuff like that. I remember they had a Cloggers X1 from the 1974 World Cup Finals (West Germany), and I think 3 or 4 of the Scotland team, made it into the X1 ( Jim Holton, Billy Bremner, Davie Hay and possibly Joe Jordan. Don't think the magazine lasted too long, but was a real laugh at the time.

Probably seem crap today, but they were simpler times....

My old man used to call Roger Hynd "Garth", after some muscular cartoon character of that era.

    RIP big guy.

I'm sure I read somewhere back in the day that the big man took up the trombone to build up his lungs. He was built like the proverbial brick shit house, as I recall.

    RIP.

Record players are easy to get now. A new one is 50 quid. They work fine. Interesting that old albums seem to survive better than the singles. I guess the singles were cheaply made. They all still work though.

Might follow up on that - got a bunch of old albums & singles from the 60s ,

    Cheers
