£12million. Hate to say it, but he’s been a very good player for Sunderland and whilst the fee is overinflated because of the league he’s in, again it’s an example of a good young Scottish talent we could’ve signed as a competent squad player.

I think our problem is we keep going for quite conservative managers. Gerrard basically copied Rafa Benitez and was always stability first, with the only time it worked domestically in 4 years being a season where we conceded about 10 goals in the league. Gio again is a conservative manager who was all about control, pragmatism, Jack and Lundstram in the middle etc. Beale was meant to be more forward thinking, but if he was the brains behind Gerrard it means he’s ultimately from that style too. We won’t be able to compete with the PSVs etc until we are winning the title most years and getting to the CL or depriving the tarriers of it. That means beating the dross every week and winning Old Firms. Our managerial choices do alright (barring Gio) in OF games, but don’t know how to put sides away week after week domestically. Beale HAS to change that and if he doesn’t win the league cup, I’d sack him regardless

We need a style of play. For his flaws that were exposed at Lyon, Leverkusen etc. Petr Bosz makes sides where everyone knows what they’re doing and there’s a clear identity. We seem to put players out on the pitch in a shape and hope for the best. Not so much a criticism of last night, but one of the games against Morton, Ross County etc where we create fuck all. My worry is we’ll scrape by until mid Autumn, then get stuck incapable of beating a low block. Beales shown me nothing that makes me think he can suss that out, he’ll be fine in OFs and against top 6 SPFL sides, but we should be putting 3-4 past the bottom 6 every week and we dont

Not sure, he did alright against Bakayoko and actually got forward a bit. Played a lovely inside pass to one of the forwards than Borna would never have seen. I think he’ll do well in the OF games and away at Hearts/Aberdeen etc. We need to become less reliant on Borna and Tav as attacking threats, it leaves so much room behind them and we don’t have the players to cover them

Well as vice captain, if you can see that their best player in the air, who has already punished us 2-3 times in the tie, is being marked by someone very weak in the air, you should make the decision to overrule the coaches plans. Would Terry Butcher/Richard Gough/Amoruso have passed the buck there because of the set piece coaches instructions, would they fuck. We ended up defending a set piece immediately after we’d scored to get back in the tie, with both of our best players in the air (CBs) miles away from an in swinging ball, with the oppositions best aerial threat getting a clear run onto it. That’s fucking criminal at amateur level, let alone in the CL

Butland looks an unbelievable signing for a free (although on big wages no doubts). Sterling I like the look of, probably benefits us that Borna will be injured for the OF as I imagine he’ll do better against Abada/whoever’s at RW for them Cifuentes will help us beat sides in the league, he’s not great defensively but we’ve brought him in as an 8 rather than a 6 Dowell has looked steady and I doubt he’s on megabucks, fine as a squad player Lammers I can see something in, but I think he’s going to struggle unless we play him RW in the Aribo role Dessers will be fine, he had a bad injury back end of last season and I imagine will be working back on fitness Danilo we haven’t seen enough of Sima looks dreadful tbf

You can’t really say losing to a very strong PSV side who have only lost once in a year at home, is a fuck up. Losing to Servette would’ve been a fuck up, this is unfortunate but we’re up against a settled side who spent more on one player than we have on a full squad rebuild
