David Haye injured, fight with Wlad postoned

Recommended Posts

David Haye's world heavyweight title fight against Wladimir Klitschko in Germany on 20 June has been called off.

The decision to postpone the IBF, WBO and IBO title contest was taken after Londoner Haye, 28, suffered an injury in training at his base in Cyprus.

The pair were due to meet in front of a 60,000 sell-out crowd at Schalke O4 FC's Veltins Arena.

Haye was hoping to become Britain's first heavyweight world champion since Lennox Lewis retired in 2003.

A short postponement may allow the fight to be re-scheduled but Klitschko's camp appears keen to fight on the allotted date.

"I'm speechless. We will have to get someone else in. I will take who ever it is," said Klitschko.

The Ukrainian's manager, Bernd Bonte, added: "They haven't given any detail on the injury but say Haye can't train. We will get someone else but I can't say yet who it will be.

"Ninety five percent of the fans who bought tickets did so because of Klitschko."

A possible alternative opponent for Klitschko could be WBA champion Nicolai Valuev, the 7ft Russian whose fight against Ruslan Chagaev on Saturday was cancelled when Chagaev failed a medical.

The build-up to the Haye-Klitschko bout had been mired in controversy over Haye's controversial behaviour when promoting the fight.

He attended media events wearing a T-shirt depicting him proudly holding aloft the decapitated heads of Wladimir and his elder brother Vitali.

Renaming Klitschko as "Bitchko", he also derided him as an embarrassment to boxing and rubbished his record.

Gutted about this 2bh. The big thing now is whether it acually gets rescheduled. Ive still got a feeling deep down Wlad dont want this fight and that he may want to fight maybe Valuev on June 20th if the WBA name him champ and then he can further unify. Personally, I hope the fight still happens in the near future, Haye certianly has as much of a chance if not more so of KO'ing Wlad as the guys that have previous to him. Get fit soon Hayemaker!!!

Vlad sees an opportunity to run away from David :anguish:

Wladimir Klitschko has confirmed Ruslan Chagaev as a replacement opponent for British heavyweight David Haye.

The IBF, WBO and IBO champion was due to face Haye in a 60,000 sell-out at Schalke 04 FC's Veltins Arena.

Haye had hoped that the fight could be restaged three weeks later after withdrawing from the original date with a back injury sustained in training.

But Ukrainian Klitschko was keen to retain the date and will face joint WBA champion Chagaev instead.

Problems with television broadcasters and further doubts over Haye's fitness also helped convince the Klitschko camp to draft in the 30-year-old.

"It's unfortunate that David Haye can't compete. But now I'm looking ahead and I'm excited about a particularly sporting challenge with Ruslan Chagaev," said Klitschko.

The Uzbekistani, unbeaten in 26 fights, shares ownership of the WBA crown with Russian Nikolai Valuev.

A title decider between the pair has been delayed three times with the WBA's deadline for a meeting due to expire at the end of this month.

Klitschko's coach Bernd Boente has claimed that the winner of the fight between Klitschko and Chagaev will be classed as heavyweight champion in the Ring magazine's respected rankings.

"We have already waited until June [to fight Haye] when we wanted to fight March, April," explained Boente earlier this week.

"We don't know if Haye will really be ready on 11 July. It could be that he hurts his back again and we have the same problem.

"The important question is are RTL happy to go on 11 July? Are HBO ready to go three weeks later?"

Adam Booth has suggested that David Haye may now meet Vitali Klitschko in September.

Haye was set to challenge Wladimir Klitschko for his IBF/WBO titles on June 20 before pulling out with a back injury.

With Wladimir now taking on Ruslan Chagaev on that date and scheduled to fight IBF mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin in September and possibly Alexander Dimitrenko in the New Year it could be a long time until the younger Klitschko brother is able to fight Haye.

This means the next round of negotiations between Booth and Bernd Bonte is likely to concern the WBC champion - assuming he is given permission by that governing body to forego the mandatory challenge of Oleg Maskaev.

rather than take the chance of moving the fight with Haye back three weeks

"We’ve spoken about Vitali in September," Booth told the Daily Star Sunday.

"Fighting Vitali is just something that was thrown up with a few other things, but we’ve not directly talked to them about it.

“It was passed on to me by someone else. It has always been about the Klitschkos and the interest of David against a Klitschko is now greater than ever."

Booth went on to suggest that Wladimir may be secretly pleased that it is brother who will step into the ring with The Hayemaker and not him.

“We were only asking for a three-week delay and Wladimir is either impatient or it’s an indication of his desire about really wanting to fight David,” Booth added.

Absolutely gutted about this. This fight was going to bring serious interest back to heavyweight boxing and Wladamir has pussied out of it. Haye will be fit in three weeks and he could have easily waited until then. Haye would have brought a spark back to the heavyweight division but now its back to average eastern european's fighting it out in fights that nobody cares about. Disappointing. Hopefully Haye sticks at it and can get a shot at Vitali now.
