GeneralCartmanLee 313 Posted October 29, 2009 Share Posted October 29, 2009 The former Scotland striker Maurice Johnston is to be inducted into Scottish Football's Hall of Fame. He triggered controversy as a former Celtic player who signed for Old Firm rivals Rangers in 1989, only days after pledging to re-sign for Celtic. Johnston joins the likes of Jock Stein, Denis Law, Jimmy Johnstone, Brian Laudrup and Henrik Larsson. The Hall of Fame is a permanent feature in the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Stadium. In an interview with BBC Scotland in 2007, Billy McNeill, who was Celtic manager in 1989, claimed Johnston had signed a contract but the club's board failed to pay Nantes the fee due for the controversial striker. When he signed for Rangers he became the first high-profile Catholic since the Second World War to play for the club. Johnston started his career at Partick Thistle and then moved to Watford where he was an FA Cup finalist in 1984. MY SPORT: DEBATE Give your reaction to this story He moved to Celtic the same year and was a Scottish Cup winner and League Championship winner with the club, scoring 52 goals in 140 appearances. Three years later he moved to French club Nantes, where he scored 22 goals in two seasons. He moved back from France to Rangers and scored 46 goals in 100 games winning two Scottish Premier League titles. Johnston earned 38 caps for Scotland, netting 14 times, and played in the 1990 World Cup Finals. He also had short spells at Everton, Hearts and Falkirk. He retired from playing in 2001, following a six-year stint with the Kansas City Wizards in the United States. Johnston has remained in the MLS in a managerial capacity, with spells at Red Bull New York and Toronto.
