Defensive Problem for ICT game

RANGERS have major problems in defence for tomorrow's game with Inverness after it emerged Steven Whittaker is also a doubt for the match.

With Madjid Bougherra suspended and Sasa Papac struggling with a groin problem, the Light Blues were already looking as though they'd be short of options at the back.

But Whittaker reported for training at Murray Park this morning with a badly bruised toe after Saturday's 4-0 win over Hamilton at Ibrox.

That means he too may have to sit out the meeting with the Highlanders and his absence could leave Smith with a major headache.

Andy Webster could make his first league start of the campaign in Bougherra's place as the Algerian serves a one-match ban.

But while Richard Foster is certain to feature as one of the full-backs, who else comes should Whittaker not prove his fitness in time remains to be seen.

Maurice Edu, Darren Cole, Gregg Wylde and Salim Kerkar can all play either on the right or left sides of defence.

None of them have featured regularly for the SPL champions in recent weeks though, let alone in those positions, and Smith has plenty of thinking to do ahead of kick off.

Steven Naismith is another who appears set to miss the game as he continues to recover from a hamstring strain.

Smith said: "We've got a wee struggle defensively as we've got doubts over Whittaker and Papac for tomorrow.

"Madjid Bougherra is suspended so we're a wee bit short in that respect while Steven Naismith is still struggling further up the field.

"We have some people missing but they're not long-term problems. Andy Webster is available, as is Richard Foster, so we'll be able to cover the situation."

This was always going to be a tough game and it has got tougher now.

Our defence has not been the best when it was at full strength and now we will either have a CM deployed at CB or that waster Webster who will probably only last 5 minutes before complaining of an injury.

I wouldn't be surprised if Webster got injured at training today as well just before we're set to play our Boogie team. We're due a win against them by now though and I see us doing it, wouldn't mind seeing Wylde have a go at FB if Papac is still out.

i love how people are expecting webster to fill in like its natural

no doubt he'll give coisty a high five and then complain of a sore hand

It's better than assuming he'll get injured, trying to think positively at least!!
