The Rangers Sign Alejandro Bedoya

Just to add to the point about having a sitting midfielder in front of the back four, it seems that a simple 4-4-2 is a thing of the past.

Coaches seem to love the 4-2-3-1 or the 4-1-3-2. There are obviously a few more but these two seem to get a lot of attention especially due to the fact that there is a lot of cover for the back four and it allows the attacking players in your team to get forward a whole lot quicker without the defensive responsibilities.

As for someone`s quote about Celtic looking a lot better at controlling the middle of the field last season, I do agree. I am not sure what they played but if you look at Kayal, Ledley, Yeung, Commons, Brown they are all good with the ball at their feet along with good movement Looking back at our midfield, we had Davis and Naisy, who can match those guys any day, but Edu and Jig are just not technically good enough or have the movement off the ball to compete. It looked a lot of times like it was two vs four in those games. I think by having better skilled players who can play with or without the ball (McKay & Bedoya) we can match up with them a lot better.

PLUS! Can you imagine, we have a better defense, better strikers and a better goalie already, if we can control the midfield then we can destroy them!!!

Rangers were warned on Friday night that only an increased offer will land Alejandro Bedoya in time for their potentially season-defining Europa League tie.

The midfielder was granted a UK work permit on Friday, prompting Ibrox boss Ally McCoist to speak in optimistic tones about persuading Swedish club Orebro - already set to lose Bedoya to Rangers for nothing in January - to do business now.

McCoist wants to tie up the 24-year-old, already the subject of a failed £400,000 bid, in time to face Maribor in the first leg of the Europa League play-offs on Thursday night.

But Orebro sports manager Lennart Sjogren told Sportsmail that, while the work permit may take Rangers a step closer to their man, only hard cash will secure a quick deal.

'If they want to make a bid and do business right now, offering us more money than they did before, we will listen to that,' said Sjogren.

'I can only say that the bid before was not enough. If they come back with a higher bid, we will listen. Until then, he is our player.'

McCoist argued: 'You would think, in an ideal world, that it would suit both parties to get a deal concluded earlier rather than later. Having looked at the Swedish league set-up, I don't think they have any chance of relegation or getting in to the Europa League either.

'I would hope that a deal would suit both clubs. He's very keen to come.

'We've not had any feedback since the work permit was agreed, which was only this morning (Friday), but we would be hopeful.

'There was a bid but that's been withdrawn because it wasn't accepted.

'I would hope we would bid again, although I haven't had the chance to speak to Craig (Whyte).

'But we were over at Hampden this morning and he has been given a work permit, which is good news obviously.

'Hopefully, we can strike a deal there to get him over sooner rather than later.

'If he's the only one we bring in, yes, we would try to register him for the Maribor tie.

'I think we can only register one after the last day so, if we got a fee agreed, that would be the obvious one, yes.'

Swedish newspaper "Nerikes Allehanda" are claiming that we've had another bid rejected.. Apparently our latest bid was lower than the 2 previously rejected bids.

This is a quote from said article.

Magnus Shield Mark. - "We're positive to releasing Bedoya, but instead of increasing their offer they have decreased it. I'm confused. I'm not sure what Rangers are doing. We have rejected two previous bids and now they make another one that's even lower. Rangers say to the media that that they want Bedoya and want to have him able to play in Europa League next week, but they are not showing it. They are sending some strange signals, especially to Bedoya himself. We have no reason to give players away. A higher finish in the Allsvenskan table gives us more money in bonuses then what Rangers are offering to pay."

I know we haven't bid what they want, but surely they have to realise that as time goes on, any bid will be lower. I mean, why would we pay the same money at the end of August as we would have done in July?? His contract is coming closer to the end, so we're hardly going to increase our valuation of a player we can get for nowt in a few months time!

I no you rube can make players look better than they are but this boy looks like he will be a good addition the 1st team.

On Clyde 1 yesterday Fraser wishart said he was on the work permit panel and had to watch a DVD of him. He described him as someone who is tricky, exciting and something we don't have.

I'm starting to hope we pay the fee and get him now cause yesterday we lacked a cutting edge to our play!

Gers will also make one last push to sign Alejandro Bedoya before Wednesday's Europa League deadline.

They already have a deal in place to bring in the USA midfielder on a Bosman from Swedish club Orebro in January.

After securing a UK work permit for the 24-year-old at the end of last week McCoist would like to have Bedoya at his disposal now.

The Swedes have already knocked back a Gers bid of £400,000.

Director of football Smith said: "The Bedoya situation is one we have to consider but that's down to Ally and I'll be having discussions with him regarding a number of things in the morning."

Rangers are locked in talks with Orebro as they try to reach an agreement over the transfer of Alejandro Bedoya.

The Ibrox club failed in a fresh attempt to land the American midfielder at the weekend, making a bid which STV understands was lower than the previous offer made in July.

Both sides though have re-entered talks on Monday and are working on a deal to bring the player to the Scottish Premier League ahead of schedule.

“Talks are being held between the two clubs and they are still ongoing today,” Orebro’s director, Markus Skoldmark, told STV.

“We have said we would be positive to a transfer just now. But the two parties need to agree a fee.”

Bedoya has already agreed terms to move to Ibrox on a pre-contract in January, but Ally McCoist is keen to add him to his squad with immediate effect, with the player having been granted a UK work permit on Friday.

Rangers have until 11pm on Wednesday to register one additional player for their Europa League play-off round ties with Maribor, with McCoist having already stated his desire to have Bedoya for the two matches.

He was registered though? So how does it work from that? I thought if you were name in the registration then that was it

No, you have to actually play, so we're OK if we want him:

18.07 As a rule, a player may not play in a UEFA club competition (i.e. UEFA

Champions League and UEFA Europa League, but not UEFA Super Cup) for

more than one club in the course of the same season. Exceptionally,

however, a player who has been fielded in the first, second or third qualifying

round of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League is entitled to

play in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League for another

club as from the group stage, provided that his former club did not qualify for

the group stage of either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa

League; moreover, as from the start of the round of 32 (round of 16 for UEFA

Champions League), a player can be registered in accordance with

paragraphs 18.18 to 18.21 below. A substitute player who has not been

fielded is entitled to play for another club competing in the UEFA Champions

League or UEFA Europa League in the course of the same season, provided

that he is registered with the UEFA administration in accordance with the

present regulations.

Rangers' bid to land USA midfielder Alejandro Bedoya 'touch and go' as clubs haggle over early release

Aug 16 2011 By Keith Jackson

FRUSTRATED Swedish minnows Orebro last night described Rangers' bid to snatch Alejandro Bedoya as "touch and go" after another day of talks between the clubs came to nothing.

Ibrox boss Ally McCoist wants the USA midfielder signed up in time to be registered in his squad for Thursday's Europa League qualifier against Maribor as a late wild card. But he only has until tomorrow to push the deal through.

Stalled Bedoya has already signed a pre-contract with the SPL champs and was expected to join McCoist's squad as a free agent in January after the clubs failed to reach an agreement on a transfer fee.

But McCoist is desperately short of players for the trip to Slovenia and has asked owner Craig Whyte to thrash out a price with the Swedes which would allow the 24-year-old to move now.

That attempt stalled over the weekend when Orebro binned the latest Rangers offer of around £150,000, insisting it was worth even LESS than the bids which had previously been kicked out.

Another round of talks started up again yesterday but by teatime Orebro's director of transfers, former Dundee United player Magnus Skoldmark, told Record Sport the deal was hanging in the balance.

Skoldmark said: "Talks are still being held but there is no agreement yet. I would have to say right now the whole deal is touch and go.

"I can't say much more but it's hard for us to understand what Rangers are doing here.

"If you run a 100 metre race you don't give up after 80 metres do you?

"There is only a small difference involved but I can't say what will happen. It might happen tonight, it might happen tomorrow or it might not happen at all the way things are going."

It's understood Orebro are still holding out for a £400,000 fee for Bedoya, who admitted yesterday he is hoping to be given permission to start his Rangers career early.

He said: "You never know what will happen because things can change from one day to the other.

"I honestly do not know what is happening right now. It might be that Rangers are doing this to put pressure on Orebro to sell me.

"I would prefer to be in Glasgow now but I have a contract with Orebro and I am a professional. I will see it out."

McCoist is already without full-backs Steven Whittaker and Sasa Papac, striker Kyle Lafferty and has serious injury doubts over captain Davie Weir and Kyle Bartley.

It is hoped that Lee McCulloch will be passed fit to fly out with the team tomorrow despite missing Saturday's SPL win in Inverness.

But another of McCoist's new boys, £300,000 Aussie Matt McKay, has been ruled out as he is not expected to be granted a work permit until Friday at the earliest.

The midfielder will play his last game for Brisbane tonight and is confident he will win his work permit case.

The 28-year-old said: "I'm not trying to get too far ahead of myself. It's out of my hands. Rangers will do their business. They're a big club."

"It's sad to be leaving the Roar. I've had some great times here but when opportunities arise you have to take them.

"It's a big chance for me at a club that fights for titles every year. I've always harboured hopes of playing in Europe."

Australia boss Holger Osieck is pleased the midfielder has won his dream move to Ibrox.

But he has told McKay he needs to get a regular game as the Socceroos gear up for their World Cup qualifiers.

McKay said: "I had a quick chat to Holger and he just wants to see me playing well. He doesn't mind where I play.

"He has told me I'm important to the national team set-up."
