Sectarian row chief married to Celtic fan.

THE head of the anti-racism watchdog that has provided evidence of sectarianism which could lead to Rangers having to shut Ibrox for European ties is married to an ardent Celtic fan, it has been revealed. Piara Powar, the executive director of the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, is the husband of Aasmah Mir, the BBC broadcaster who has described herself as an enthusiastic Celtic supporter.

Last week, Powar was forced to defend his organisation against claims that an orchestrated campaign had been waged against Rangers, which had resulted in the charges of sectarian singing being brought against the Ibrox club. It has now emerged that Powar's Glaswegian wife has been reported as declaring herself "passionate" about Rangers' Old Firm rivals, Celtic. And in a past interview, Mir, a presenter on BBC Radio 5 live Drive who was brought up in Bearsden, has been quoted as saying that she could "never" support Rangers, because she remembered men in the club's shirts handing out BNP leaflets when she was at school. Rangers were last week charged by UEFA with an offence of alleged sectarian singing by their supporters following the first leg of their Europa League tie with PSV Eindhoven last month. The club is appealing against the decision later this month but, if unsuccessful, it faces a 100,000 fine and having its fans banned from its next two away fixtures. The team will also have to play its next two home matches behind closed doors after reports that sectarian songs were sung at the PSV Eindhoven return leg at Ibrox.

Surely this is a wind up :britney:

The Police from the top are in the pockets of the SNP

And we know ,in this political climate , that means they will do jack shit , bringing any major investigation into the shame of this club .

In other words , You will see a few arrests and they will all get off further down the line in the taig run PF that we have

I didn't realise it went that deep. I thought that the same anti terror laws and levels of alerts given by Westminster would apply in Scotland also. So there's no chance these 'terror supporting banners' will be stripped out of Scottish football?

I remember reading that article and wondering why Rangers fans were being branded as BNP supporters. The articles below are about the NUJ's code of conduct and their guidelines on how to cover reporting on the BNP.

NUJ: 'How to report the BNP'
Give the public the facts about the BNP and expose their racist views through robust, independent reporting - that is the NUJ's advice to its members. It follows a special Reporting the BNP meeting organised by the union. Officials assured those journalists attending the meeting in London last week that members who uphold the NUJ’s Code of Conduct and "refuse to be used to propagate racist propaganda will be given the full backing of the union". A new website setting out key questions to ask BNP politicians, exposing myths about asylum and immigration, highlighting good journalistic practice in tackling racist propaganda, and bringing together information on far-right parties will be launched in the coming weeks. The NUJ’s policy condemns racist and fascist views and states “the best way to combat such views is to oppose and expose them wherever and whenever they are expressed, rather than by seeking to deny their expression”.

The NUJ Code of Conduct states that journalists shall not handle racist material, and in addition the union has a set of guidelines on race reporting that include advice on reporting racist organisations. The union pledged support to members prepared to take a stand against racism in their workplaces and to provide support for those targeted as a result of their exposés.Other suggestions included staff taking action against their publications accepting ads from the BNP and pressing for a right of reply by anti-racists to BNP assertions. Leaflets and posters setting out the NUJ’s guidelines will be distributed to workplaces across the UK and well-known journalists will be approached to back the union’s campaign against the media being used as a platform for racist or fascist propaganda.

A journalist:

strives to ensure that information disseminated is honestly conveyed, accurate and fair
differentiates between fact and opinion
produces no material likely to lead to hatred or discrimination on the grounds of a person’s age, gender, race, colour, creed, legal status, disability, marital status, or sexual orientation
NUJ Code of Conduct

As journalists we have a responsibility to hold politicians to account.

Our job is to scrutinise people from all parties. Our job is also to tell the truth, which is why we have provided this resource for journalists covering the BNP in the course of their work.

It gives background information on the party, its past, its policies and its personnel; it provides information on how to follow the party’s progress in the European Parliament; it provides resources to help challenge the party’s claims on housing, immigration and race, and it explains why the BNP is not like any other party.

After all, no other party:

was founded on the basis of a whites-only admission policy
feels the need to remind members: ‘We are not a racist party’
denies the Holocaust
shelters so many convicted criminals in its ranks
has links with a website that encourages attacks on journalists
The NUJ encourages its members to expose the BNP to public scrutiny and to challenge their claims.

When you do, you will find the veneer of respectability soon wears off. A few well-directed questions here, a bit of background research there, and the British National Party stands before you as it really is.

This website provides you with a starting point for that research and puts the party, and its members, into a political and historical context. We hope you find it useful.

Jeremy Dear, General Secretary, NUJ

No one I spoke to in Dagenham knew much about the BNP beyond the fact it was anti-immigration. They knew nothing of the history or the background of the party’s leaders or activists.

I'm not sure of all that .Not sure anti terror laws are the same in either Country

Here ,I honestly think ,they make it up as they go along . They always have a cover

The Scottish people don't care as the most of them don't feel threatened as yet.

In England , for obvious reasons . The powers are very accountable
