Euro 2016 - Scotland bid

First Minister Alex Salmond has revealed that a feasibility study will take place regarding the possibility of Scotland hosting Euro 2016.

Salmond said that initial talks had taken place with the SFA but these were only exploratory at this stage.

"I talked about this with the SFA and we will have a feasibility study," he told The Scotsman.

"There are a number of factors to be considered, such as the number of teams which will be in the tournament."

Scotland would require new or significantly upgraded stadia to meet Uefa's requirements for the tournament, and if the number of teams involved rises from the current 16 that could pose difficulties.

A joint bid with the Republic of Ireland to stage Euro 2008 failed, and Salmond has previously stressed that any push to stage Euro 2016 should see Scotland look to stage the tournament independently.

At this rate, it's the only way we'll qualify :craphead:

 At the last sentence, typical.

Anyway, I'm happy we're looking into this idea of hosting the Euros

We'll qualify, we wont have such hard groups now that our ranking is up.

As for hosting the tournament, if we do it we should do it alone, our main problem is that 3 of the stadia we'd use are in the same city

That is true, and it would take an awful lot of work and money to get other stadiums up to scratch and large enough! Who would pay for that I wonder?

There are only four stadiums in Scotland that are up to scratch: Hampden, Ibrox, The Piggery and Murrayfield.

Aberdeen can't fill their stadium so what would be the point in adding more seats to it?

Tynecastle will probably be a tesco or a block of flats by then and you just couldn't justify upgrading Tannadice.

A total pipedream IMHO.

If we upgrade Hearts and Hibs we have 3 Stadiums in Glasgow, 3 Stadiums in Edinburgh - We would need to space it out alot more ! Why don't we make a neutral venue for the CIS Cup finals or something in Dundee or Aberdeen - just to space the Stadiums out. Otherwise we'd be forced to upgrade small Stadiums that would be empty.

EDIT - How many Stadiums are needed ?

How can we take what you say about transfers etc seriously when your wrong again about Salmond making a mistake at the draw, when it was actually the presiding officer?

I may be wrong Andy but with a 16 team competition, I believe we need 8 stadia. So with a little money spent, we could have 6 easy. Then it is a case of adding two more. Again, I might be wrong, but I thought 25k capacity would be good enough.

So Pittodrie and Tannadice would seem logical

Its not just a problem of stadia. Even if you could get the 3 in Glasgow and the 3 in Edinburgh as part of your 8 on capacity alone, the problem then becomes you have to prove a certain number of hotel rooms, transit infrastructure, etc. Can you imagine if you had games going on simultaneously in two of the three stadiums in Glasgow with the number of international fans that would be present? And how well could the police cope with 3 weeks of games in just two regions? They would need an unbelievable amount of cover.

Dont agree

How many games are every played simultaneously at a Euro Finals? We are talking 2 at the most. So, one in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh - you would just plan it to suit your policing/security arrangements. Not too difficult really.

As for accomodation - the teams themselves would nto have to stay in the cities, there are plenty of plush places down the ayrshire coast within a short drive to Glasgow and similarly north and south of Edinburgh.

Really not too difficult at all mate.

Spot on.

I think it would be ridiculous to add to these stadiums when it would be the only time they would be full!

It would be different if we were to joint-share it with England, and they could use the four stadiums you mentioned above.

In 9 years time, Scott Brown will be out of the equation. He'll be a fat, bald, b*stard playing for the likes of Hull, Torquay or Darlington. His career was f*cked as soon as he joined the tims!!

Will he f*ck, he will be a Barca legend by the time he's 25. A world class player, who honestly reminds me of Gazza.
