RANGERS could be ready to firm up their long-standing interest in Watford defender Danny Shittu.

But the Hornets want around £2million for the Nigerian powerhouse who is believed to have told his employers he wants to go this summer.

As SportTimes revealed on May 10, Rangers have been tracking the 6ft 3in international for the past few months.

They are weighing up a £1m- plus offer as Walter Smith looks to add to his central defensive options for next season.

Watford chairman Graham Simpson said this week that Shittu was going nowhere, but did confirm there was Premiership interest in the player, with West Ham and Fulham also interested in the running for the 27-year-old who has 12 caps for his country.

But Shittu is aware of Rangers' interest and reports in London claim he has told Watford he wants to move on, with his preference to move north for a crack at European football.

Rangers expect to have Danny Shittu in place before they head to Holland for their pre-season training camp this weekend.

Express Sport revealed yesterday the Light Blues had made a £1 million plus offer for the 27-year-old Watford star.

Both clubs were locked in negotiations last night and it is expected an agreement will be thrashed out before Walter Smith’s squad fly out to Holland on Saturday.

Watford chief executive Mark Ashton last night refused to comment on the transfer negotiations.

Ashton said: “We don’t comment on any transfers, in or out, until the deals are done and dusted.”

Watford want straight cash for their man but Rangers would prefer to do a player plus cash option, which could include Alan Gow or other of Ibrox’s fringe players.

Shittu has already told Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd that he wants to move to the SPL and won’t travel with the Hornets when they leave for their summer tour of Austria tomorrow.

The big Nigerian international is aware that Rangers are ready to top his Championship wages and are willing to offer a three year deal to entice him north of the border.

Shittu has Premier League experience and was offered a return by West Ham and Fulham but has turned them down for a crack at the Champions League.

Do we want him (as in us fans)?

Yes!!!

Sounds good but why are we playing around with low offers and fringe players as part of deals FFS <cr>

I can see Celtic nipping in whom can also offer Champions League Footy without qualifiers... <cr> <cr> <cr> <cr> <cr>

That phrase will always scare me, no matter the context

The same was said about the Lafferty deal but no players were exchanged in the end, and we're not the only club to do this, even Liverpool have offered a cash plus player deal to Villa for Barry recently. It's one way of trying to get players who are surplus to requirements of our wage bill.

As for signing him, yep, I'd take him in a heart beat, think he would be a good partner for Cuellar and he could do well in the SPL.

Great player!! same for me rabbitt, not going to be satisfied til hes on the plane to holland. Knowing our luck he'll fall off the treadmill at his medical.

Aye - he should stay away from Andy "Calamity" Webster.....

Eventually, if true, a good signing from Walter this summer.

The right age, powerful, experienced in a better league than the SPL and has a cracker of shot on him.

Lets hope Shittu doesn't live up to his name.

He'll be our Balde.

I hated big Bobo, but he was bloody effective.

Yep, you could always count on him to give away a penalty in a Euro final (tu)

Effective, if not the brightest.

That one against Lyon as well, that was comedy.

Hopefully it means Weir will only play in CIS/Scottish Cup matches or if someone needs a rest/loss of form.

I hope it also means Dailly and Webster never play and the same goes for Broadfoot. However I expect to see Clubfoot at RB.
