Beckham to join Milan

Im not that big a fan of Beckham at centre mid, but the pace of the game in Italy could mean that it would be the perfect position for him at Milan.

He played well under Carlos Queiroz there, mind you.

Why wasnt that the case for Alonso then? Juve didnt want him because of his pace in a vital midfield area, Beckham isnt going to outpace many on the wing

Alonso is a different case altogether. Juve dont play with wingers and Ranieri apparently wanted someone who could break ahead of the strikers. For some reason, he brought in Christian Poulsen, who is probably slower than Alonso.

What i really think happened is that Liverpool rejected their approach for Alonso after Gareth Barry played (and consequentially cup tied himself for Europe) for Villa against FH, and the "slow" comments were just a case of sour grapes from Ranieri.

Serie A is a league that is played at a slow tempo, and it will suit Beckham, imo.

You can't blame Becks for leaving LA Galaxy, the standard of football at that club is only amateur compared to what he's been used to at United and Madrid.

He only went to America to keep Posh happy, but for him it was a bad career move.

Capello likes to watch his players playing competitive football.

It would have been good to see Becks going to a club like Rangers. But £100k+ per week wages mean this will never happen, shame really.

Well yeah, what i meant to say is that their wingers play in a totally different style.

Ranieri said: "He left me perplexed by the slowness of his movement.

"He would have found it hard to support our midfield line seeing as our wingers don't give support like at Liverpool."

That was a quote from Ranieri when asked about Alonso.

looks like this deal could be scuppered Galaxy aren't happy and could be scuppering him

'David Beckham's American dream is over just 15 months and 23 days after it started.

His decision to look for a loan move away from LA Galaxy is the beginning of the end for his ill-conceived bid to promote 'soccer' in one of the game's most frustrating backwaters.

If Beckham completes a move to AC Milan there will be no going back. Loan switch it may be, but once in Italy the pull of proper football and the England team must rule his head as well as his heart.

Does anyone really think the midfielder could drop to the level of LA Galaxy again if he makes an impact with Europe's team of ageing galacticos?

More importantly, would Fabio Capello continue to pick Beckham in his England squad if he reverted to his failing project in the States?

The take of the Italian, who helped push the icon to LA when the pair fell out at Real Madrid and has now prompted the AC Milan move, is likely to prove persuasive.

Beckham decided to join Major League Soccer and triggered waves of nauseating publicity on both sides of the Atlantic only when he thought his England career was over.

He took up what he called the challenge of 'changing history' in U.S. sport and dragging 'soccer' out of the Z league. It plainly hasn't worked and nobody outside the interested parties who witnessed his introduction at LA Galaxy in July 2007 will be sorry.

Signing Beckham was clearly the biggest achievement they were ever going to make and the two starts in his first season and just eight wins out of 29 in his second prove it.

However, if Beckham is to become one of many who have failed to make the game in American a serious business, he could still stand alone for England.

The idea of a move to Milan in the MLS close season is based on extending his international career and, while the caps these days come only in the form of cheap cameos, Beckham is just 19 away from having more than anyone before him.

The prospect of that is something he simply can't resist. But playing club football all year round to prove his fitness to Capello would be self-defeating.

Something has to give and the Beckham lights are about to go out for the Galaxy.

I think Beckham could do a job for Milan, but I don't think it will be as a week in, week out starter. Milan must be in the running for oldest side in world football though...As for his time in MLS, there are signs that interest and attendance is rising, but it will obviously never be like a European league and it should focus on developing home grown stars rather than ageing veterans like Beckham, Ljunberg, and others.
