NHL wants to impose head-shots rule now

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=ap-headshots-rule&prov=ap&type=lgns

TORONTO (AP)—The NHL wants to adopt a new rule against blindside hits to the head before the end of this season, according to two reports Wednesday.

The league is hoping to fast-track the proposed rule and is preparing a DVD package after a number of players suffered concussions this season. The highlight package will illustrate what would, and wouldn’t, be allowed under a proposed rule change adopted by general managers at meetings in Florida last week.

The NHL plans to circulate the highlight package to all 30 teams within the next week or so, according to the reports.

“It’s a process that has never been done before in the season,” NHL senior vice-president of hockey operations Colin Campbell told the Globe and Mail in a story published online early Wednesday. “But this is so important an issue that if we can possibly avoid just one concussion, we should do this.”

In order to get the new rule in place, the NHL needs to get the players, coaches, management and officials involved, Campbell added. Also, the NHL board of governors would have the final say on any change.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Toronto Star the new rule could be in place by the end of the regular season and in time for the playoffs.

“We are working to see if the new rules can be implemented as quickly as possible, and perhaps as early as before the end of the season,” Daly said. “We are proceeding on the basis (of) doing what is best for the game and the players on a responsible timetable within the parameters of our legal and contractual obligations.”

Play off race is heating up in the Eastern and Western Conferences.

Calgary and Colorado are battling it out West for 8th place and theres a 5 way race in the East.

Montreal, Philadelphia and Boston are all tied on 82 points while Atlanta and the Rangers are in 9th and 10th place respectively.

With only 5 or 6 games left for each team, it is going to go down to the wire!

Washington, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, New Jersey, San Jose, Chicago and Phoenix have all clinched their places in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Stars are finished :anguish:

Ken Hitchcock to return next season? Not as far fetched as you'd think.

I guess I'll be following the Caps in the playoffs, and I think they are the clear favorites for Lord Stanley's Cup.

Thrashers@Caps tonight, TG.

I am praying the Caps tank for their SouthEast division rivals. They have already clinched the East anyway. Hopefully Bruce Boudreau does his old pal John Anderson a favour :(

Mike Modano most likely played his last home game for the Stars last night. He had a goal, an assist, and scored in the shootout alongside Jere Lehtinen, who's also on his way out.

The greatest American hockey player of all time for my money :praise:

Woooo and we're leading the NHL!

I never got to see much of the game due to homework etc. but it was on in the background. Its always good to start the season with a win and it was nice seeing young Brandon Sutter play well, scoring two. Wild pulled their goalie for the last minute and a half but never really pressured us - some great face off wins in there too.

Hopefully I'll get more time to sit down and relax and take in tomorrow's game.
