CELTIC have agreed a deal in principle with Barcelona to sign veteran Sylvinho in January.

The former Brazil star last week revealed he is willing to leave the Nou Camp for Parkhead if an agreement can be reached between the clubs.

It’s understood Bhoys chiefs have now struck a deal with the Catalans. And if personal terms are thrashed out, 34-year-old left-back Sylvinho will become a Hoops player in the New Year. The former Arsenal star joined Barca from Celta Vigo in 2004 and won two La Liga titles and the 2006 Champions League.

He alternated the left-back spot with Gio van Bronckhorst and then Eric Abidal.

But with new boss Pep Guardiola using a 3-4-3 formation, Sylvinho has found himself surplus to requirements.

And on the back of the capture of Marc Crosas, Celtic have moved to capture a second Barca player.

Sylvinho would not be eligible to play in the last 16 of the Champions League should Celts qualify after turning out for second-round certs Barca in Basel.

However he would be free to play if the Hoops drop into the UEFA Cup.

Young midfielder Jeffren Suarez, an ex-reserve colleague of Crosas, is also on the Parkhead radar.

I think he'll do a decent enough job, especially in our pishy league - 34 but look at Weir!

He's better than the likes of Naylor, Wilson and even Robson who has been playing at LB. He's got plenty experience, likes to get forward and decent enough defender.

That's ashame. Sylvinho is a cracking person and is also a pretty damn good left back. He isnt as fast as he once was, but he can still move.

He captained Barca in their 5-0 rout of FC Basle a few weeks back in his 100 appearence for the club.

is he up to the physical side of our game though is he prepared to roll about in a mudpit on a pishy saturday getting the shit kicked out of him ?

fair question. Same could be asked of Laudrup when he arrived with us. Made the rest of the SPL look silly.

I will not be chuffed if Sylvinho shows up at the phiggery. Then again, News of the Screws isn't the most accurate source ever.
