Is it possible to succeed in Europe with poor domestic opposition?

Although I think rogers is a gold plated dud and far from the top manager the great unwashed take him to be history does show that more often than not both the Old Firm tend to be  successful together in Europe. The best example of this of course was May 1967 when both were in European finals but even a few years later we won in Barcelona only 2 years after they had been in the Milan final. Indeed even the UEFA finals in the noughties were only 5 years apart so I guess the truth is be careful what you wish for declan

Yeah a few Greek teams have reached the quarter finals a few years ago as did a Cypriot.

If you're a good team you're a good team regardless of domestic opposition.

The third best team in Cyprus easily beat the (at the time) second best team in Scotland, sums up for me how shite this league has become.

There are some decent teams that do relatively well in Europe while playing in mediocre domestic leagues, there isn't a league anywhere as uncompetitive as ours though. The general standard in Scotland now is truly shocking and its proved every summer in the European preliminary rounds. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th best teams in Greece, Cyprus, Switzerland etc beat our lot year after year. The team that won our league at a canter last year got beat at home easily from an average Anderlecht team. Anderlecht though play in a competitive league, not a very good league mind but a competitive one.

We probably think it's better than it is because we are so close to it and Scotland is pretty geographically isolated from the rest of Europe ... just look at the teams who have eliminated our top clubs in recent years before most of us are even back our summer holidays to get a true perspective on the standard of Scottish football
