Never known a player with his ability to disappear for prolonged periods. His average contribution must be around five or six minutes out of every ninety he plays. If anyone thinks that a player in his mid twenties is suddenly, after years of literally getting paid for nothing, going to turn into a tireless grafter, is not optimistic: such a person is deluded.

There is no comparison in the terms you suggest. But after checking to see if my team has won, the next thing I do is check if the team I detest most have lost. At club level, that is the taigs, at international level, that is Engerlund.

Can’t see it that way. The English don’t even think about us enough to hate us. Their indifference is even more galling than hatred. Wishing England well because they’re British is no different to wishing the taigs well because they are (intermittently) Scottish. Wales and Northern Ireland have never ridiculed us as a team or as a country so I always wish them well and I was delighted with both doing well in recent qualifying campaigns. I’m abroad so I’ll miss the day of mourning, the candlelit vigils, the wailing and the gnashing of teeth but I’ll revel in it even from thousands of miles away.

Thank fuck they’re out. Sick of hearing about Geoff Hurst etc - they’re as bad as the fucking Lisbon Lions.
