ANDY WEBSTER is set to come out of the Ibrox shadows and play a massive role in the title battle with Celtic.

The forgotten man of Ibrox has played only six games this season – all of them during an ill-fated loan spell at Bristol City.

But Webster, who was capped 22 times for Scotland before his jinxed move to Rangers from Wigan two years ago, has emerged as the man most likely to fill Madjid Bougherra’s boots in the weekend clash against Hearts.

Bougherra is banned for one game and with Kirk Broadfoot crocked and Sasa Papac touch and go to be fit, the door is open for Webster to return against the club where he made his name.

Webster, 27, featured for Rangers’ second string in yesterday’s 1-0 defeat to Celtic and looked solid in the backline. But he was unable to stop Simon Ferry’s winner which helped the Hoops retain their reserve league title.

Now he could be plunged back into first-team action against the Jambos and reserve team gaffer Tommy Wilson reckons he will do well.

Wilson said: “He’s looking more like the Andy Webster I remember playing for Hearts and Scotland. He’s fitter than he’s been in a while and has got over the injuries he had last season.

“The function of the reserve team is to facilitate the first team. You see the likes of Christian Dailly, Stevie Smith and Andrius Velicka coming through to play in the first team when required and Andy can do the same.”

Rangers No 2 Ally McCoist has watched Webster closely in his last two reserve matches and declared: “Andy has looked good, really good, in recent weeks and he’s bang in contention for us again.

“That’s what the gaffer needs as we enter a decisive spell of the season. Andy is definitely one who can come in and do a job for the team.”

Keeper Allan McGregor could also return for Sunday’s clash with Hearts.

The shamed shot-stopper was in goals for the reserves against Celtic yesterday and looked confident.

He also did well to not react to the abuse from Celtic fans who mocked him about his off-the-field shenanigans with Scotland.

Stevie Naismith, however, could be toiling to make the weekend clash.

The former Kilmarnock man received a kick to the calf inside the first minute of yesterday’s reserve clash, but battled on for an hour.

The Rangers fans who turned up at Ibrox hoping to see their kids beat Celtic and keep alive dreams of the reserve title heading to Govan were left disappointed.

In the end Celtic were worthy winners, but Gers coach Wilson was not too downbeat and said: “The reserves have performed beyond my expectations for this season.

“This game – our most difficult of the season – coincided with an injury crisis and the Youth Cup Final on Wednesday.

“We had seven players under 17 in our squad – four of them were only 16. But they gave their all and I couldn’t have asked for any more.”

Call me cynical.....but this looks awfully like Webster is being introduced as a possible replacement for Bougherra at the end of the season if we lose and he leaves.

Oh christ..

Did webster not struggle to get a game for Bristol?

and apparantly when he did play he was chronic.

I cant recall any game he has played for rangers or wigan so I cant comment directly on him, but from what Ive heard he shouldnt be near the first team.

As the above says Magic and Broadfoot are out, as might Papac be. That leaves Weir and Whittaker. Dailly has played alright recently so he'll be in, which would leave one space at the back, which will be filled by big Lee if fit, or Webster. I'm guessing Danny Wilson won't get a sniff.

Well he played at LB for Bosnia, Austria Vienna, and, Rangers. St. Etienne wanted him for the LB position, so I'd pretty much say he's a LB, although he has played at CB earlier on in his career.

He would be a disaster waiting to happen if he played at CB for Rangers imo, especially alongside David Weir; they would sit even deeper due to the lack of pace, the distribution from the back would be horrific, Papac cannot deal with crossed balls, he's not very good in the air, his positioning isn't that great, he sometimes panics/makes basic errors, and, gets caught out.

Also, Alexander keeps a clean sheet at the weekend and there's talk of bringing McGregor back - why?

Noticed that aswell, would be a joke if he was brought back in

Danny Wilson has been playing far better all season.

Why on earth wouldn't we introduce him?

because hes under 30 year old.
