Croatian Football Federation says striker Nikica Jelavic will undergo surgery on his ankle and will miss the European Championship qualifier against Israel on Saturday.

The federation said Jelavic was diagnosed by Croatian doctors on Monday. His rehabilitation will be carried out in a local clinic.

Jelavic was hurt during the Saturday's match between his Rangers team and Hearts in the Scottish Premier League.

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic says he will decide later whether to add another player to his squad

Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic is to have an operation on the ankle injury sustained against Hearts on Saturday.

Jelavic joined up with Croatia's national squad and, following a scan on the injury, it was decided that the 25-year-old required surgery.

Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot had earlier pulled out of the Scotland squad with an ankle injury

Jelavic, who joined Rangers from Rapid Vienna this summer, was hurt in a challenge by Hearts' Ian Black.

The Croatian Football Federation described it as a "serious ankle injury" on its website.

More information would be forthcoming regarding the expected duration of his lay-off after surgery on Tuesday.

However, Rangers have confirmed that the striker suffered ligament damage and will "miss a number of matches".

Jelavic, whose rehabilitation will be carried out in a local clinic, started the season with Rapid and played for them in Europa League qualifying.

That made him ineligible for Rangers' Champions League campaign, but he has scored four goals in six appearances for the Glasgow club, who paid £4m for his services, in domestic league and cup games.

Jelavic, who was a substitute against Latvia and Greece last month, will miss his country's Euro 2012 qualifier against Israel on Saturday.

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic says he will decide later whether to add another player to his squad.

Where have Rangers confirmed this?

A fcuking horrendous challenge from that bastard Ian Black, a player who get's away with it time and time again. It's about time someone put him in his place!

If true, and Jelavic does require surgery, it's a massive loss.

Confirmed by Rangers

RANGERS have been majorly disapppointed with the news that Nikica Jelavic will need ankle surgery.

The Croatian striker suffered the damage in Saturday's come from behind win over Hearts.

Now Jelavic is set to be sidelined for a number of matches which is a major blow for boss Walter Smith.

The former Rapid Vienna star was hurt in a challenge by Ian Black and will now have the operation in his homeland.

It is unclear when he will be fit to return to action but will clearly be unavailable in the immediate future.

A Rangers statement says: "Following a tackle in Saturday's game against Hearts at Tynecastle, Nikica Jelavic suffered ankle ligament damage that requires surgery. The striker will now miss a number of matches for the Club."

Hopefully Kenny Miller does not pick up an injury.

Beattie is nowhere near fit, you don't know what you will get from Lafferty, Fleck is not fit, Naismith is being used out wide now...

Hopefully Jelavic can get back ASAP.
