'Sectarian'

What is Sectarian?

It appears that in Scotland, what is deemed sectarian is open to individual interpretation.

The word Fenian (an irish republican/revolutionary etc.) A descriptive word that is now used by a section of the celtic support to describe themselves, without challenge from any club officials or authorities.. This however is only deemed sectarian when a Rangers fan uses it.

The Sash and Derrys Walls are two folk songs that contain no sectarian lyrics yet are often examples by the great offended of the Rangers supports sectarian songbook. It is only a matter of time before these two songs are also wrongly deemed sectarian. Apparently all it takes is a statement from Dr. Reid these days.

The people in charge of our club, really have to start defending our supporters.

Who's claimed that they are Sectarian? You contradict yourself in the next sentence.

Anyway, the word sectarian is over-used in Scotland - and used wrongly in a lot of cases. It just seems to be an umbrella term for the Oldfirm rivalry.

the word 'sectarian' doesnt exist outside of the old firm these days. and only by our use of one word.

its a nonsense.

teams all round the world have all sorts of nicknames and derrogatory terms for their most hated rivals. and theres never any fuss, its just the way it is. you call us something, we call you something else. but it just so happens our most hated rivals are followed by a religious minority. and minority groups always get everything their own way in british society.

Daily Record: Sectarian shame of would-be Commons Speaker John Bercow over claims he sang The Sash at Rangers party

STV: Dick Campbell’s job safe despite sectarian song incident (Derrys Walls)

2 quick fire examples of which there are a lot of them. There is no contradiction, I am stating that these songs which have no sectarian reference are often deemed to be.

Yeah, these examples kind of prove the next point I made - that the word sectarian is often used wrongly in Scotland. It's nothing more than an umbrella term for the Oldfirm rivalry.

It actually takes away from incidents that are genuinely Sectarian.

Technically, sectarianism is making a value judgement about somebody because they are a member of a particular sect. So saying things like 'Tory scum', or even 'members of the BNP are off their heads' are both examples of sectarianism.

Technically you're right. But 'sect' is almost always used for a group with distinctive religious beliefs and that would rule out the Tories or the BNP.

In 21st century Britain, if you're not 100% comfortable with other religions, you are a sectarian bigot. If you are not 100% comfortable with homosexuality, you are a homophobe. If you believe that men are better than woman in any way, you are a sexist misogynist. If you believe there is too much immigration, you are a racist.

Get used to it, nout is changing

It would be funny if it wasn't true :(

Considering large sections of the Celtic support have never been more pro-Irish and anti-British, then I'd suggest fen!an has never been more accurate to describe such people.

And most of them dont know who their Fathers are so 'fenian bastard' would be even more accurate. :craphead:
