The New Iron Curtain. Are they better than the old one?

One gigantic part of Rangers' history is the much vaunted "Iron Curtain" defence.

This defence is a who's who of Rangers legends, with Brown, Young, Shaw, Woodburn, McColl, and Cox, featuring therein.

Who could ever live up to these Gods of Ibrox?

Well, to be frank, the defensive players of the last few years can.

Examining the stats of the original Iron Curtain defence over 10 years of the 40s and 50s, shows that they mostly conceded more than a goal a game. The exceptions were 1949-50...26 goals in 30 games, 1947-48...28goals in 30 games, and 1946-47...26 goals in 30 games...the only times they got our goals conceded record below a goal per game.

Surprisingly, the present day Iron Curtain has seen our defence fare rather better than that...and it's been over more games played in the season than the originals played.

The last 3 Rangers seasons have seen 28, 28, and 29 goals conceded in 38 games (as against 30 games a season of the originals), which converts to about three quarters of a goal in every game. Fantastic in anyone's book, but this season's Rangers team is blowing all the numbers out of the water...

...this season sees the new 2011 Iron Curtain sitting a few games away from the half way stage of the season, with 6 goals conceded in 15 games. This converts to a record of almost 1 goal conceded for every 3 games played. We are going from tremendous defence of the last 3 years, to unbelievable stuff.

So to finish, the present Rangers defence, as well as the defence from the last 3 years, are better than what we had when legends strutted their stuff and were christened The Iron Curtain.

Should the term "New Iron Curtain" be used for these new defenders of the cause in the present 2011 team?

You ended a sentence with "but". I wasn't inclined to look for puns in a post which exhibited such horrendous grammar.

Hey, if you want me to get my grammar on .. I'll get my grammar on. I'll paint this forum with grammar of excellence you wouldn't believe.

The old Rangers teams with the Iron Curtain defence, didn't score as many per game as the recent teams.

In general their was more goals per game.

And if you looked at a couple of season in the early nineties we scored less goals than we do now but our defense was tight as fuck
