He's turned it on for Argentina recently. 13 goals in a year, new Argentine record. Can see him having a fantastic 2014 World Cup.

Indeed. He has been exceptional for his country recently.

His detractors don't seem to realise it, but it's a mark of his greatness that they seem to expect nothing less than him single-handedly winning a world cup. Which is something that no player has ever done.

Muller: 85 goals, 60 games, 0 penalties.

Messi 86 goals, 65 games, 13 penalties.

Messi is, IMO, the best player ever, but Gerd Muller is the best striker/goalscorer ever.

1972/73 Bundesliga: 3.37 gpg

2011/12 La Liga: 2.76 gpg

1972/73 European Cup: 2.81 gpg (3.05 gpg in 1st & 2nd round / 2.00 gpg from QF onwards)

2011/12 Champs. Lge.: 2.76 gpg (2.65 gpg in group stage / 3.14 gpg in knockout stage)

1972/73 DFB-Pokal: 4.16 gpg (!)

2011/12 Copa del Rey: 2.96 gpg

1972/73 DFL-Ligapokal: 7.75 gpg (!!!)

2011/12 no equivalent competition

Worth factoring that into the debate as well.

Maradonna in 86 pretty much carried Argentina on his bach tbf

Everyone expects messi to do the same

I'd have Argentina as joint favourites along with Spain and Brazil.

They will defnitely go far, and Messi will have an amazing world cup.

the Germans are better than Brazil & Argentina, but Messi's mates are still leagues apart from the rest.

Correct.

Including the League Cup is a huge benefit to Muller's tally.

The fact it's in South America will be a crucial factor.

Even without this benefit, I'd fancy Argentina over Germany anyway.

because of 1 player? The Germans are a better team, without doubt, and only threat to Spain on paper.

spot on!

Amazing stats for both but a lot more goals got scored across the board back then.

the stats are irrelevent, how does low scoring games involving utter dross at the lower end of the primera division affect this barcelona side, the greatest goalscoring team in the history of the sport?

Yeah, except he didn't. Bochini, Burruchaga and Valdano were all fantastic players, and Burruchaga and Valdano in particular had outstanding tournaments, and the rest of the team was perfectly solid too.

An enduring myth, but still a myth.

The year in which he achieved this, they were the second best behind Madrid.
