Smith And Buffel Latest

WALTER SMITH has dismissed reports that Steven Smith has suffered a set-back in his recovery from injury, insisting the defender's rehabilitation is moving along according to plan.

In a bid to return to full fitness the 21-year-old is currently in Belgium completing a specialised programme to strengthen muscles in his groin and it's hoped the extra work will also guard against further problems in the future.

Smith has been out of action since December 17 and therefore has yet to make an appearance under the former Scotland manager at Ibrox.

The left-back initially suffered problems in this area four years ago when coming through the ranks at Murray Park and spent a lengthy period on the sidelines recuperating.

Although he recovered fully from that pelvic issue and became a first team regular under Alex McLeish and then Paul Le Guen, Smith again started to experience discomfort in the latter part of 2007.

This resulted in surgery on his groin and while the rehab has been considerable, the manager is pleased with his defender's progress thus far and expects to see real developments in the coming weeks.

Walter told Rangers.co.uk: "It's correct that Steven is out in Belgium at the moment and the reports back are positive.

"It's untrue to say he has suffered a set-back, this trip has been fixed for some time and it's a progression of his rehabilitation.

"He is over there working on his recovery and is enjoying it very much. It's almost a special pre-season program just for him.

"Due to the nature of his injury and the problems he has had in the past, we felt it was better to go to someone who specialises in that area.

"It's about ensuring he gets his recovery totally right this time.

"The programme will also hopefully guard against any future problems in and around that groin area because it has plagued him for some time now."

The news is also positive on Belgian playmaker Thomas Buffel, who has been out since January 21 following a knee operation.

Like Smith, he has been following his own programme over the summer and will join the squad for its pre-season trip to Germany.

The manager added: "Thomas is coming along well. He is about a week or two behind the players but will come to Germany with us.

"Once there we will continue his rehabilitation and we will be looking to get him playing again a week or so after that."

Great news about Smith. With all the conflicting messages comming through its good to get the right story.

As for Buffel, he's got the talent, lets see if Walter can get the consistency out of him.....

buffel should be in the team, it sickens me how people can be so blind when they say he is a bad player etc, or inconsistant or lightweight, its so frustrating.

this guy has genuine quality about him and will IMPROVE our first team when he is in it

But he IS inconsistant and he IS lightweight.

I think even his biggest fans will admit that.

how can you be consistant when you are sitting on the bench?

and as for this lightweight garbage, we have had MANY quality players in our time that have been built like buffel.

what is it people want? a team of battering rams? yet we are all moaning about us possibly signing McCulloch?

pfft

rant over

He wasn't always on the bench, he had a decent run of games.

I'm not saying we haven't had lightweight players before, or Buffel should be critisised for being so, but he is.

Just playing Devil's Advocate...

buffell is talented and could be our best player but he is lightweight and fall's out of games far to easily he is our most frustrating player because everyone know's his talent
