Our Players

What I've noticed about our players is they're able to play a variety of positions but have very specific abilities and weaknesses which become apparent when we are under pressure to do something.

So my point is that Warburton may well champion his approach to surrounding himself with players who are positionally flexible, but in reality I do not think they are flexible at all and have to be used in very specific ways to get the best out of them.

Look at Tav because he's the easiest example, he may well be able to play as a fullback, winger of some kind, attacking midfielder, but in reality he's a poor defender. So actually we can scratch off his defensive duties because in my opinion they are severely lacking.

Barton cannot be used as an attacking mid, neither can rossiter, I would much rather have Wes concentrate on goalkeeping ability rather than his distribution because he's a fucking goalkeeper!

This type of constant blending of player positions and duties has always pissed me off, jack of all trades - master of none anyone? There are reasons why players are given positions and are expected to concentrate on that position and no other  - it develops their strengths,  their weaknesses are less exposed and - guess what -they'll probably enjoy doing what they do best rather than what they do poorly as well.

How to develop a good player into average one - give him too much to do so that he cannot concentrate on his god given abilities.

I know what you're trying to say but you've dropped a clanger.  Tav has been our best defender this year so looks like he HAS worked on his game.  Last season we were crying out for a good, defensive midfielder so we bring in Barton and the promising Rossiter. Then we tried to play the two of them and completely change our set up. It didn't work, has confused the fuck out of MW and he's searching for how to set us up again going in to game 5 of the league season, let alone that being the mhanks at the Paedodome.

Flexibility comes in to play when you switch tactics or formation accordingly in a game, sadly MW doesn't do that.

Yeah it's really weird, according to Warburtons philosophy you'd expect him to frown upon such watering down of specific skills, you'd expect him to streamline all of our teams from youth upwards. In each team there is a certain job to do in each position, and these players will be trained for that position only.

Kind of like what SAF did at United, and tbh, I could be our best defender this year going by the shite we have.

It's riddled throughout the other threads but to address the poor defending situation he's brought in Hill and Senderos; that is just unacceptable and could ultimately cost him his job.

I have no doubt Warburton is a smart guy, you can just tell by what he says and what he's done. But if you have a weakness and you have an opportunity to irradiate that weakness what is the first thing you do?

Build on your strengths or eliminate the weakness?

Why oh why did he go on a midfielder free for all when we required so much better quality elsewhere?

I know it is sort of swaying away from the main topic, but it's a hell of a stupid thing to do and you're right it could end in tears because of his poor decision making. However, he might have no other choice due to finances and if that's the case shame on King.

There's nothing wrong with having specialists in each position.  Jose Mourinho signs specialists.  Warburton says he wants an interchangeable front 3 but that doesn't seem to be very effective to me.  Celtic have a front three with very direct wingers on either side and it works better than our three.

Even Samurai thought not focusing on one skill and generalising was extremely vulgar, can we send Weir and Warburton to japan?

We have some really good, exciting players.Just dont feel we have set up correctly this season to get the best out of them.

Totally agree, Warburton is creating an old pals atmosphere with his older favourites getting picked and that's just not on.

Defensively, we have dog shit to pick through on match days.

Well Barrie McKay isn't a left-winger and Kenny Miller isn't a right-winger.  Should we be surprised that both have been shite for weeks?  Kenny's scored a couple of goals this season but he's fucking dreadful.
