Thommo Injury Latest

WALTER SMITH has revealed Kevin Thomson might not need an operation to remedy his recurring groin injury after all.

The former Hibernian star saw a specialist yesterday in Manchester, who advised him to rest then train again to see if the problem persists.

There is a possibility Thomson could feature at Inverness on Sunday, although Smith fears playing the midfielder there could result in him being bothered by the injury for longer.

Lee McCulloch is another player who Gers are waiting on before they finalise their squad for the trip north.

They will fly to the Highland capital tomorrow and while the Scotland midfielder is fit again after a calf injury, he missed training today through illness.

Alan Hutton will definitely not travel as he completes a two-match suspension while Andy Webster and Stevie Smith won't be risked.

Instead, they will play in a closed-doors friendly against Third Division outfit Dumbarton on Monday evening.

While news of their imminent comebacks is good, so too is that of Thomson possibly avoiding the operation most people were expecting him to have.

Smith said: "It is not quite as clear-cut as him needing to go for surgery.

"The specialist wants Kevin to do a little bit more training, let it settle down then restart training again to see that it doesn't come back.

"He has had this problem for two or three weeks now so he is going to rest up then get a bit of training under his belt.

"There is a possibility he could be fit to play on Sunday but our worry is that the problem could come back and if it does, it will be possible that he will need an operation.

"We will just have to wait and see. If he gets through training and playing without further problems, it won't be necessary."

No need to risk him IMO, he will play a crucial part in our title challenge, so it would be suicidal to risk him

Here's my team

-----------------------MgGreggor-------------------------

---Whittaker--------Weir-----Cuellar---------Papac----

-------------Ferguson------------hemdani---------------

-------Burke-----------Buffel-------------Naismith------

------------------------Cousin-----------------------------

One replacement from the team that beat Gretna, Adam out with Buffel taking his place

Based on the Gretna game, anyone could take Adam's place for me.

Who said anything about risking Thomson?

All that article says is the problem may not be as serious as thought. And that he should rest up, return to training, and see if the problem persists in which case THEN surgery looks certain.

But no one seems to be suggesting the idea that he'll play?

Edit: Ah, missed that bit in the article. Well, I agree, playing him on Sunday would be stupid, and I suspect Smith knows this and ain't going to do it.

Thomson might play on Sunday according to Scotland Today ????? :sherlock:

Aye, I read that earlier. Wouldn't be worth the risk I don't think, as it could make the injury worse.
