Rangers to make new bid for Davis

By Steven Beacom

Steven Davis has been on loan to Rangers from Fulham

Rangers were today preparing to make a new bid for Northern Ireland midfielder Steve Davis following Carlos Cuellar’s £7.8 million move from Ibrox to Aston Villa.

Classy defender Cuellar’s switch from Scotland to the English Premier League won’t please the Rangers fans, already depressed by the club’s European exit, but the pain would be eased if the Glasgow giants could land Fulham midfielder Davis, who was a big hit on loan with Walter Smith’s side last season.

The proposed deal taking Davis to Rangers on a permanent basis has not reached the saga proportions of Gareth Barry’s potential transfer from Villa to Liverpool, but it is a move that has been talked about for most of the summer.

Rangers made an initial bid of £3 million which was turned down by Fulham, who want something approaching the £4 million that they paid Aston Villa for him one year ago.

Since then the clubs have spoken but without reaching a conclusion.

The Northern Ireland star would be keen to return to Rangers knowing his first choice chances at Craven Cottage are likely to be limited.

Now with money to spend following Cuellar’s switch, Rangers are ready to tempt Fulham with an improved offer.

Smith could certainly do with the Cullybackey man.

In their embarrassing Champions League defeat to Kaunas last week, Rangers were sadly lacking in midfield. With skipper Barry Ferguson injured and Davis back with Fulham, the Teddy Bears were missing two of the most influential players in the side that inspired them to the UEFA Cup final last season.

As for Cuellar he has admitted that it is a hard decision to leave Rangers, but feels it is the best one for his career.

Villa boss Martin O’Neill, who of course was a massive hero with Celtic fans during his managerial reign at Parkhead, keeps a close eye on events in Scotland and has clearly been impressed by the Spanish defender.

Last night Villa agreed a fee of £7.8 million for the 26-year-old, invoking the release clause in his contract..

Cuellar, who was named Scottish Football Writers player of the year last season, told Rangers officials he wished to leave the club at the weekend.

Rangers revealed they offered the player a substantially improved contract but it was declined due to his desire to move to the Premier League.

Cuellar said: “My ambition has always been to play for my national team and I believe that playing in the biggest league in the world for Aston Villa will help me realise that.

"When I told [chief executive] Martin Bain on Sunday that I wanted to leave, I did so with sadness.

"The Rangers supporters have been fantastic to me, but I am young and want to play at the highest level.”

Smith said: “This has come as a surprise and I am disappointed. Carlos Cuellar has been a great player for the football club.

"The club has received a substantial uplift in fee and we will now reinvest in the team."

Fulham can expect a call about Davis this week.

I think Smith has no choice but to go for Davis now - he needs players in and good ones. Davis has proven himself and wants to play for us. Smith knows that the fans want him so I see Davis at Ibrox soon!

confirmed - article

Rangers are today expected to put everything into making Northern Ireland midfielder Steve Davis a permanent fixture at Ibrox before the weekend.

With their financial clout boosted by the £7.8million sale of Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa yesterday, Gers boss Walter Smith will now look to strengthen a midfield area which is lacking depth with captain Barry Ferguson currently out injured.

And the lack of European football at Ibrox this season won’t influence Davis’ decision if Smith can finally agree a fee with Fulham for the player he had on loan for the second half of last season.

The Gers crashed out of the Champions League to Lithuanian side Kaunas last week and stumbled to a 1-0 win in the opening Scottish Premier League game of the season at Falkirk last weekend.

If Smith gets his way Davis will be in the line-up to face Hearts this weekend as he attempts to end Celtic’s two-year hold on the SPL title.

we need Davis brought in yesterday, and another decent midfielder at least. God forbid anythin happens to Thompson in the midfield, if he were to be injured, we'd have the pleasure of havin Dailly back in the middle.

BUY DAVIS NOW, pay the money, stop fuckin around.

C'Mon Murray, you said there would still be money for signings before Cuellar buggered off so add another £7.8m to that money and get yer team out o the shit! 2 quality midfielders URGENTLY required before we slip up in the league on Sat. Davis is still keen on the move so grab him now, my only concern is that we still badly need a more creative midfielder and deadball specialist, the aussie guy might fit the bill The money equates to £4 for Davis, £4m which has been branded about for the aussie dude and the £3m which is no doubt now needed for Loovens??? £11m on top of the £9ishm already spent gives £20m. Take away Cuellars £7.8m and the total spend is more like £12m, thats not a kick in the arse off what we got for Hutton! There should be this amount available easily. Consider Davis and Loovens as investments that will be sold on eventually and this is good business. C'MON MURRAY MAKE IT HAPPEN NOW!!! Lets get the team buzzing again and stop all this negativity, WE ARE THE PEOPLE! :unionflag:

Not going to happen, just like loovens thats not going to happen and that other aussie guy its not going to happen.

Its too late :(

if we dont sign players soon, we will be f*cked for this season. only got a couple fo weeks left in the transfer window, and panic signings are not ht way to go. Something will be done though, as i think SDM realises he will have protests outside ibrox on Saturday if nothing is done before then, so will want to stop those with big signings.

The clocks ticking SDM....

Why wasn't he our first summer signing? Davis has already proved that he is good enough to play for Rangers so I really hope that now we have the money, Walter can sign him before the Hearts game at the weekend.

Come on Walter, sign Davis NOW!

GERS CLINCH £3M DAVIS DEAL:

Rangers will end the longest transfer saga of the summer this weekend by signing Fulham midfielder Steven Davis for £3 million.

The Northern Ireland skipper was a massive hit at Ibrox during his loan spell last season.

Then he spent the summer in limbo as the clubs haggled over a price to make the move permanent.

But last night boss Walter Smith, whose transfer kitty was bolstered by the £7.8m sale of Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa in midweek, finally got his man as Fulham agreed to sell and Davis was close to agreeing personal terms.

The deal is unlikely to be done before Rangers face Hearts at Ibrox today but Davis will be Smith's third signing in a week by tomorrow night at the latest.

The club unveiled £3m Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes yesterday, hot on the heels of signing Valencia's highly rated attacking midfielder Aaron Niguez on Thursday.

Davis' arrival may mean Smith putting on the back burner his interest in Palrmo's Australian internationalist Mark Bresciano.

But the Ibrox manager will push ahead with moves to bring American midfielder Maurice Edu to Rangers.

The 22 year old has just finished representing the USA at the Olympics and Rangers are trying to obtain a work permit for the player.

Edu was recommended by them from their former striker Maurice Johnston, now his manager at Toronto Blizzard in the MLS.

Smith said: "We asked Mo if he thought there were any players in American league he thought would do well over here and he recommended Edu."

"The MLS, who own all of their players, are happy for him to come to Scotland."

"We're in the final stages of tying things up, but we still have to put in for the work permit."

"He's only 22 and we'll continue to look at him."

Meanwhile, Andy Webster will soon be on his way out of Rangers in a loan deal.

The injury hit defender now needs games and Smith's looking for a suitable deal.

He said: "Andy has been out of the game for two years and he needs to play again."

"Motherwell are interested in him but nobody has done anymore than talk to his agent."

"If they can come to an agreement, and the player is happy to go there, there is no reason why he shouldnt."

RANGERS boss Walter Smith last night sealed a £3 million deal for Fulham's Steve Davis - and revealed he's close to landing Yank star Maurice Edu.

Hot on the heels of completing a shock £3 million move for Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes, the Rangers gaffer finally succeeded in landing Davis - on loan last season at Ibrox - on a three year contract.

News of Northern Irishman Davis' arrival to complement that of Portuguese playmaker Mendes willl go some way to quelling a planned fans' revolt ahead of today's SPL clash with Hearts.

Mendes is likely to feature today against Hearts while Davis may also be included if the paperwork can be rushed through in time.

Now with Mendes and Davis safely on board, Smith has turned his attentions to tying up the next "Super Mo."

Scottish Daily Express confirms Davis is a Ger....... again.

The article also mentions that the deal for Bresciano is likely to be put on the back burner now.
