Scotland to compete at the 2012 Olympics?

I'd love to see it. But everyone's view here obviously depends on their politics.

For me the United Kingdom is the last part of English Imperialism. It may take time, but it will eventually break up.

You make imperialism sound a bad thing. The UJ is also a sign of failed Scottish imperialism.

no chance.

Big chance!

I mean, we now have an nationalistic government in Scotland, thats a step towards independence IMO albeit a very small one.

This is why I hate the SNP.

Care to expand on that?

Sure. I just get annoyed with how that party jumps on the bandwagon of pulling at peoples heartstrings when we have a bit of success. They can't just acknowledge that we achieved it as part of a British team, so they start to think "Well we can do it all buy ourselves". Theres no way Scotland as an independent country would be able to invest as much money into sport as we do as part of the United Kingdom.

But Jamaica, that financial powerhouse, can? Your argument is pants mate.

I'd love to see Scotland compete in its own right. I've always felt that. As for small nations, Jamaica is a good example and I don't think winning very little would be a cause for embarrassment. Separate teams for the Olympics would bring it into line with other sports in the UK.

I'm for it, definitely.

Jamaica? They are only sprinters and that is it they don't do it in almost any other sport!

Don't really care about this, but that's a daft point.

16 of Britain's 19 golds came from cycling, swimming or sailing. They don't do it in almost any other sport.

Only huge countries like China, America and to a lesser extent Russia have the capabilities and resources to compete in almost every event, most countries tend to specialise in certain events and any medal in others is a bonus.

Greasy Pole? Caber Tossing? H_ammer Throwing?

Seriously, though, I wouldn't mind if we only competed in a few sports we were good at. We are a small country, but so are plenty of others. t might also encourage mor divesrity in sport in Scotland.

I'm sorry but i seriously can't stand these people. GB played as a team and lived as a team, the success has been based on exellent team work. Yet we've got the SNP trying to ruin it with their anti-union pish, a reason to fucking celebrate and they still can't shut up about their independence. I really really hate these people with a passion.

This thread for me highlights the thing about us as Scots that frustrates me the most.

That malaise, the, "Och, we'll never do that"

or

"We are too small, we are shite, we will be embarrased."

This malaise is our biggest problem - a huge lack of self esteem and the country is sick with it

Yet some think we are all of a sudden better when we compete as part of a union? To think that shows that they just do not get the Olympic ideal

Chris Hoys excellent performances were nothing to do with the olympic sailing team. He'd win gold if he was representing his street.

That's the shyte we've had to listen to for centuries from England in order to make us feel inferior. People honestly believe what comes out of Westmonster.

It was just great to hear Chris Hoy and David Florence dismiss the notion of a Scotland team for the Olympics and say how proud they were to be part of the British team, as proud to wear the Union Jack as the Saltire. Proud to be British and everything that stands for.....Well Done guys.
