Rangers Media Match Report – Forfar vs Rangers at Station Park, Wednesday 18th. February, 2009.

Match Report by nvager.

After a very poor game versus Celtic, Rangers arrive in Angus for a game against a Forfar team languishing in the lower echelons of the Third Division. Whittaker replaces an injured Broadfoot and Edu, Naismith and Beasley replace Ferguson, Mendes and Davis in midfield. Lafferty reverts to the bench and Boyd joins Miller up front. McCulloch stays in central midfield and with Edu and that suggests to me a lack of flair in the middle.

The TV coverage is poor as it is at a small stadium, but there is no sign even of a clock or a score box on the television screen.

FIRST HALF:

Whittaker wins a corner and the ball then breaks to Whittaker from the corner, but he shoots wide of goal.

McGregor spills a cross, but the ball breaks to Beasley who is fouled.

Papac gives away a free kick outside the box, but Bougherra clears.

Weir clears out of defence.

Beasley finds Boyd, but his pass is cut off and cleared.

Weir breaks up a Forfar attack.

With about 10 minutes gone, Beasley finds Miller who springs Papac overlapping and he finds the net!

Forfar 0-1 Rangers after approximately 10 minutes.

Beasley is fouled from behind.

Papac crosses and it is a near miss by Naismith.

McCulloch is fouled and Boyd’s free kick is blocked.

Beasley crosses, but it is cleared.

Miller completely misses or miss hits the ball in good position.

Forfar attack up the right side, but the cross is taken by McGregor.

Great run by Beasley but the final ball is cut out.

Sweeping move from Rangers as Weir finds Boyd who finds Miller to Naismith to Whittaker and his cross is headed by Boyd but the Forfar keeper Brown makes a decent save.

Miller loses control and the ball goes out for a goal kick and a good chance is wasted.

Another sweeping move involving Edu, Beasley, Papac, Weir, Miller and again Beasley ends with Miller shooting wide, but it is blocked back to Whittaker who forces a save from Brown.

Forfar attack, but the shot is wide.

Forfar off side

Papac shows poor control and a long throw from Forfar is eventually cleared by Weir.

Beasley is fouled and Smith receives a yellow card.

Edu finds Miller, but he is off side.

Papac gives away another free kick outside of the box, but it is quickly booted clear.

A long throw by Forfar is cleared.

Miller ‘s touch is poor and it starts off a Forfar attack.

Miller sets up Beasley but the shot is straight and hard at the goalkeeper who saves it.

Whittaker like a few others is struggling in this game.

McGregor saves a Forfar free kick.

Bougherra moves forward, but his cross is taken by Brown.

Edu tries to spring Boyd, but Brown is very quick to see the danger.

Edu tries to get Beasley going, but is not successful with his pass.

Beasley is fouled, but Naismith’s free kick is poor and straight to Brown.

Lilley sends a pass inside Papac who recovers, but concedes a corner to Forfar.

Forfar force yet another corner from which Tod snatches at a half chance and sends it wide.

Lilley shoots high and wide for Forfar.

Rangers are poor just now.

Forfar attack again and McGregor takes the cross.

Edu finds Beasley whose cross is headed back across goal by Boyd and a Miller overhead kick is well saved by Brown in the Forfar goal.

McCulloch is fouled and Brady receives a yellow card.

A Beasley cross breaks to Papac whose cross is met by Boyd but the shot is just wide.

Naismith hits a poor cross to a Forfar player.

Campbell causes Weir some trouble, but any danger is cleared.

HALF TIME SCORE: Forfar 0-1 Rangers

Again the Rangers support has to suffer a miserable first half. After an early goal the pace has slowed significantly and we lack any flair. Forfar are still in the game and fighting hard, but they are very poor and this tells a sad tale as regards the overall level of play.

SECOND HALF:

Beasley has switched to the right wing and Naismith is now on the left.

Beasley to Edu to Naismith who finds Boyd, but the move breaks down.

McCulloch gives away a free kick, but it is cleared.

Bougherra gives away a free kick, but McNally fires over.

A Boyd head flick finds Miller, but Miller uses his hand to control the ball.

Boyd scores, but he is ruled off side.

Bougherra does well to find Boyd, but he is forced wide and Brown concedes a corner from which Bougherra heads wide.

Beasley tries a good snapshot from the right, but the goalkeeper makes a decent save.

Edu finds Beasley whose pass forward is stepped over by Boyd, this catches out the Forfar defence and the clearance is poor to Miller who takes it first on his right foot and then hits a hard volley with his left into goal. After approximately 58 minutes it is Forfar 0-2 Rangers. The game is now surely over as a contest.

Miller is caught off side.

Papac concedes a corner, which is a short one and is cleared for a Forfar throw in. This is taken long by Forfar and Bougherra clears, but Forfar regain possession.

A poor touch by Naismith stops a promising attack.

Papac receives a yellow card and Bougherra clears the danger from the resulting free kick.

Lafferty replaces Boyd after approximately 66 minutes.

Lafferty nearly through and the goalkeeper is forced to come out of the penalty box and head clear.

Edu , Miller Lafferty and Naismith combine, but the cross is cleared.

A very rash two footed challenge by Smith on Beasley results in a straight red card. If Beasley’s foot had been planted he would probably have had his leg broken.

Aaron Ninguez replaces Beasley after approximately 72 minutes. He goes on the left side and Naismith switches back to the right.

Forfar attack but the final shot is high and wide.

Naismith falls in the box, but no foul is given.

Aaron and Papac combine well on the left and the cross finds Naismith who goes for goal. The shot is blocked for a corner from which Lafferty heads over.

Lafferty finds Naismith who wins a corner which is cleared.

Forfar are tiring and Rangers are now laying siege to the Forfar goal.

After four corners a Naismith header is just wide.

McCulloch pulls up limping after 80 minutes and is replaced by Davis.

Aaron goes on a good run and sets up Naismith, who shoots straight at the goalkeeper.

Forfar still are fighting and it takes a great defensive header by Whittaker to clear a dangerous cross.

Bougherra sets up Miller, whose poor lob is easily caught by Brown.

Aaron cuts in from the left and fires a solid shot that is well saved by the goalkeeper.

A Lafferty pass is misjudged by the Forfar defence and Aaron springs clear and fires Rangers into a 3-0 lead after approximately 85 minutes. Forfar 0-3 Rangers!

Miller is fouled, but Aaron’s free kick is blocked by the Forfar wall.

After some more Rangers pressure, Whittaker fires wide.

McGuigan fouls Naismith and receives a yellow card.

Davis finds Lafferty on the left and his chip is headed into goal by Miller from about 3 yards out right on the 90 minute mark. Forfar 0- 4 Rangers!

A poor Lafferty back heel stops a promising move.

Aaron to Naismith who finds Lafferty who fires a great shot at goal but it is saved.

A minute is added on for injury time, but nothing of note happens.

FINAL SCORE: Forfar 0-4 Rangers

In the end a good win by Rangers, but overall not a good display. Forfar is a poor team, third from the bottom of the Third Division, and this game was competitive for a full hour or so until we scored our second goal. The final score flattered Rangers. It was only when Forfar tired in the last 20 minutes that we dominated like we should.

The Rangers Team:

McGregor: A good display, but not too much to do.

Rangers Media score: 7.0

Whittaker: Not taking the chance to impress when he should. Lacks confidence.

Rangers Media score 6.0

Bougherra: A very good game.

Rangers Media score: 8.0

Weir: A good display

Rangers Media score: 7.5

Papac: A good steady display, but gave away a few silly fouls and was booked again.

Rangers Media score: 6.5

Naismith: Still trying hard, but not sharp.

Rangers Media score:6.0

McCulloch: When asked to do more than just sit back and defend his lack of skill shows up.

Rangers Media score: 5.5

Edu: He moves about very well, but looks soft in the tackle.

Rangers Media score: 5.5

Beasley: Not great, then injured.

Rangers Media score: 5.5

Miller: Was poor overall, but managed to score two goals.

Rangers Media score: 7.0

Boyd: Tried hard, but not a great display.

Rangers Media score: 6.0

Substitutes:

Lafferty: On after 67 minutes and did fairly well.

Rangers Media score: 6.0

Ninguez (Aaron): On after 71 minutes. Scored a good goal and added pace and trickery

Rangers Media score: 6.0

Davis: On after 80 minutes. Did well in a short spell.

Rangers Media score: 5.0

Manager:

For this Cup Tie it was Ally McCoist in charge. The team selection looked rather stodgy for me having McCulloch and Edu, both defensive midfielders, in the centre against a team from the Third Division. If we had more flair there we could have had more goals much earlier.

Rangers Media score: 6.0

Man of the match: Bougherra for me. Miller did score two goals but messed up on m

Boyd rated a 6?

C'mon your TV coverage must have been poor to rate him a 6 <cr>

from the ET

BOYD Pass marks

A nice step-over to set up Miller's first goal and also had the ball in the net only for it to be ruled offside. Looked irked at being subbed before he had added to his season's tally.

So the ET seems to think Boyd was ok. In my opinion a 6 is OK not great. If you played well you got more than a 6.

We played pretty miserably for an hour against a third div team. We only created chances later on when they tired. McCulloch and Edu struggled to create anything. Beasley was hot and cold and Naismith although he tries hard is not match sharp yet at all. Aaron looks our best outright winger by far.

A nice step over he baisically got tripped by the Forfar defender, yet again he was caught offside. he had nothing to justify his petted lip coming off

Nvager 6 is above average. your saying McCulloch, Edu, DMB and Naismith struggled atleast you could tell they were involved. Even McBoyd said in the match thread, has Boyd been involved in this game that says it all!

Now if you think Boyd played above average with a 6, then we'll just need to agree to disagree cause he was dire last night.

He was ok no more than that. He set up Miller twice, once with a nice header for Miller's overhead kick; scored but was off side and yes I think he was trying.

Miller was awful earlier with at least two complete miss hits in good position, but played better later on when he scored two good goals.

Boyd either gets too much praise or slated undeservedly. He was not good, just ok therefore a 6. A 6 is NOT above average. You never see players getting 1 or 2 marks.

6 is above average as for your 1 or 2 marks, plenty of subs who have made a appearance have had a 1 or 2 ratings.

We see things differently and that is fine. Subs may get marks of 1 and 2 and that is rare, but never seen starters get that. So we agree to disagree.
