Deanzmeanzheinz 4,312
One of the great things about this thread is that it can honour legends from a bygone era. There's always been that criticism of the greatest ever Rangers team when so many great players from the past were never seen by most of the voters. Players like Young, Dawson, Waddell, McPhail would have been front runners if there was some kind of time machine that allowed fans to consider these great servants. If there is truly one Rangers player from the past who should really have been included then it is this man down below. David Ditchburn Meiklejohn was born in Govan in 1900, and in fact spent the rest of his life living within a few miles of Ibrox Stadium. He was made to be a Rangers captain. He was William Wilton's last signing before his untimely death. He made his debut in 1919 at Pittodrie and virtually kept his place in the team until he retired in 1936. 'Meek' made 536 appearances and scored 42 goals, most notably the penalty that set Rangers on their way to a 4-0 over sellick in 1928 and break the 25yr Scottish Cup hoodoo. Many pundits of the time and latterly older bears who seen him play all swear he was the best Rangers player of all time. Tragically he died at only 58 yrs old in the grandstand of the old Broomfield Stadium when he was manager of Partick Th. However, fittingly he was interred at Craigton Cemetery overlooking the stadium and district he spent all his life in. Over 2000 mourners reportedly attended his funeral. Again, Davie Meiklejohn did not 'make' the greatest ever Rangers team (and when you think of that arsehole co-commentating on the game last night!!!well...........) but whenever the phrase Rangers Legend is read out this great man will be up there with any of them.
