nemisis reacted to charlotte1008 in Vanguard Bears - just who are they?
Similar to many Scottish based Bears, in the last number of years I’ve found myself disillusioned by events in Scotland pertaining to my beloved football club, how it was perceived and how it was such an easy target for its enemies. After reading a few articles on-line from Vanguard Bears I decided to apply to their web based forum at http://www.vanguardbears.co.uk/ to join them in the hope of redressing the balance.
The 20th of October 2012 was a defining day for the group of Rangers fans known as the Vanguard Bears, and I’ve penned this article because I believe the work that VB do should be available for the wider support to view.
It brought the group into the public eye for many supporters of our club, and many within the media pack for the very first time.
On a day when Rangers football club set a new world record of 49,486 for an attendance in a fourth tier football match, many Vanguard Bears were in the crowd. Many thousands of people would have opened their match day programme and seen that the young Rangers first team player Robbie Crawford has been sponsored by the Vanguard Bears for the season. At half time a highly respected and prominent member of Vanguard Bears and member of the supporters group RTID NI presented two cheques with a combined total of £46,050 to our club. This amazing donation was raised by Rangers fans in Northern Ireland to support our club in its time of need.
Half time also saw the unveiling of a new banner, from the Vanguard Bears. The flag was a reward to the group, by the group, for all the hard work done by members past and present. It’s size, its message and its beauty drew many remarks from supporters who were quite rightly impressed by this fantastic banner, created by and for a supporters group who many of them had never heard of. Many supporters, so impressed by this banner, asked the people around them who the Vanguard Bears were.
So who exactly are the Vanguard Bears?
If you would believe the ramblings of the mentally-ill wannabe Irish, but definitely Scottish, blogger Phil - The Failed Journalist, we, as Rangers supporters are an underclass, a Klan, bigots and hooligans. Rich indeed, when you consider that those words have been written by a discredited journalist who has been described by the mainstream media as being “tarred with the sectarian brush”.
    - The Failed Journalist isn’t the only one to have expressed an opinion on the group though; an on-line forum "FollowFollow.com" run by someone who purports to be a Rangers supporter, Mark Dingwall, but which allows supporters of not just Rangers, but of Celtic and other Scottish clubs to post, has used his forum to launch attack after attack upon the Vanguard Bears. He describes members of the group as bullies, hooligans, terrorist sympathisers, bigots and self proclaimed Uber-fans. He has put in place a filter which will not even allow the name of the group to be published within his forum (example below).

Aided and abetted by his small group of moderators, they censure posts and remove all reference to the group. On his forum, Vanguard Bears are a group not to be spoken of, and his reasons for this?
The Vanguard Bears dared to challenge him when he proclaimed himself as the voice of the Rangers Supporters. They highlighted his rather shady financial dealings in the past, and questioned whether he was a fit and proper person to be entrusted with funds raised by loyal Rangers supporters during our clubs darkest hour. This was particularly relevant due to the very nature of Rangers off field problems, and the much highlighted issues surrounding our last owner in this regard.
So, if you would believe the mentally ill, sectarian pseudo-Irish blogger, or the self proclaimed voice of the Rangers support, you could be forgiven for thinking that the Vanguard Bears are some sort of extremist group. You would be very wrong.
Vanguard Bears are not terrorist sympathisers, bigots, self-seeking publicity junkies, hooligans or bullies. They are not some kind of Klan, nor do they consider themselves some kind of Uber-fans group.
Vanguard Bears, are a group whose members come from all walks of life. Its membership includes professional people and also includes some of the most talented bloggers and writers in the United Kingdom. They are predominantly members of the Protestant Unionist Loyalist community, and as their banner proudly proclaims their primary aim is to “Defend our Traditions”. Being a Vanguard Bear carries with it a great deal of responsibility. Vanguard Bears defend our traditions, defend our football club, and defend our way of life. They are armed with a formidable weapon, a weapon which those who would kill our club, our traditions and our way of life truly fear above anything else. The Truth!
While our enemies rely on unsubstantiated propaganda and biased media reporting from their carefully orchestrated sympathisers within the media, the truth is far mightier. To them, the truth truly hurts. When they call for trophy stripping and accuse our club of committing the greatest sporting scandal in Scottish football history, we remind them that there can be no greater sporting scandal in any countries history than that which saw a club in Scotland deliberately conceal child abuse.
We live in a time where being proud to be a Protestant is almost considered a crime, and to openly proclaim it, may see you cautioned by the police.
In Northern Ireland, many politicians sold out the members of the PUL community in their rush for power within the Assembly. Protestants have become more and more marginalised, the Orange Order have been under almost constant attack by the Parades Commission and IRA supporters and former members, who have gained positions within the corridors of power.
The vast sums of money raised by the Orange Order and the flute bands, and the positive impact the bands and Orange Orders have within the communities is ignored. A propaganda war is being waged by the media and pro IRA groups, against the PUL and the Loyal Orders.
At the same time, Republican groups are able to incite violence, promote terrorist groups and openly display firearms in public. Biased media censorship ensures that the Republican groups attract no negative publicity.
Vanguard Bears made a stand where others would not. Members of the group highlighted the disparity between how the Orange Orders, flute bands and the PUL community in Northern Ireland were being treated in comparison to the Republican element within the community. Those members compiled a detailed portfolio of hard evidence which supported this and published it. I suspect many people out-with the group were unaware that it was Vanguard Bears who led the way.
In Scotland, the PUL have been under constant attack for a number of years. The Scottish Assembly is run by a party determined to bring about a break up of the Union. It has sought and been granted a referendum vote, to decide on the fate of the Union, and it will use any means at its disposal to try to ensure they get the decision they are desperate for.
The ruling Scottish Nationalist Party, assisted by a concentrated and biased media campaign, were able to push through their parliament; sectarian laws which were not only unnecessary, but cleverly designed to suppress and isolate the PUL community in Scotland. Vanguard Bears have actively highlighted the disparities in the way the law is being applied within Scotland, they have challenged the powers that be, and provided hard evidence to support their claims. Again I suspect that few out-with the group itself, actually realise that it was Vanguard Bears who were at the forefront in exposing this.
Although Vanguard Bears are primarily a Rangers supporters group; supporters of the biggest and best supported club in Scotland, a club who have won more domestic championship titles than any other club in the world, as you have read, they are more, much more.
Despite all that our club has endured in recent times, Vanguard Bears have supported the new owners, the management team, the playing squad, and the many support staff at the club, ranging from the people in the ticket office to the people who serve the food on match days. They have bought the plot and headstone of Rangers founder William McBeath, who rests in peace in Lincoln. The Vanguard Bears have donated money to the club, they have supported their fellow Rangers fans by donating money to allow them to attend games, they have challenged biased media reporting against the club, they have challenged heavy handed policing of our supporters on numerous occasions this season, they have taken the fight to those who would destroy our famous club. They have protested against the biased BBC, and will no doubt do so again as the attacks on our cub continue. They have promoted unity amongst a sometimes divided support, and have demanded answers from those who put the very existence of our club into doubt.
Of course; if you are a Vanguard Bear, you already know this. If you are not, then I suspect you were unaware of exactly how much this supporters group has done for our club and the PUL community in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Vanguard Bears do not openly seek any recognition, nor do they class themselves as better than any other supporters group. They would much rather work away, for the benefit of our club, our traditions and our way of life behind the scenes. It is only those who know nothing about the group who denigrate and attack it.
Vanguard Bears, Defending our Traditions? Most definitely!
Hated but Rated? Hated by those who know nothing about us, but rated by all!

Hiya folks thought i might pop in and give any of the 1000 or so bears heading to the match the heads up on Annan.
First and most importantly boozers. You won't find a bad pub in the town all worthy of a visit.
The Shed-the biggest and busiest pub in the town cheap booze, great beer garden and loads of big screens.
The Annan-Rangers game will also be on live here if anyone's arriving with no ticket. The owner is also raffling one of his signed Rangers tops for charity.
Smoochies-proper Rangers pub, the local supporters club meet here. They have live entertainment planned pre match.
Auberge-my local a proper wee dive currently up for sale a snip at 160k
Blue Bell-if you like your real ales this is the pub for you although it does get called the Green Bell locally, something to do with the clientele it attracts.
Station Bar-good wee pub perfect for anyone getting the train down.
Food-All your usual, three chippies the pick of the bunch being cafe royal. The best pies are sold at farm direct by far the best in the shire. If your hungry don't wait till you get into the ground its guaranteed the pies will sell out.
    Parking
I think the police are going to direct you to the co-op car park its only a five minute walk to the ground.
If they don't just drive straight past the ground and its your 4th left.
Train-15 minute walk to the ground
    Galabank
Only two turnstiles at the away end so if you want to see the start of the match arrive early. They tell me you have a 1000 tickets for the away end. As its only a two tier terrace some of the more vertically challenged among you are going struggle for a decent view.
I may as well mention the match while I'm here.Annan have been really struggling this season apart from the second half against Berwick where we turned round a 2 goal deficit. This is possibly the weakest Annan team I've seen for quite some time.
I've not managed to see all of the Rangers matches in the 3rd division but what i have seen does give me some encouragement. Here's hoping Ally sticks with his current away day tactics.
    Roll on Saturday
    Enjoy your day

Gunslinger. Why the smart arse replies to what, in my opinion, is a genuine query from a Rangers supporter, about Rangers supporters' money?
Remember, as has already been said, this group may be looking for a place on the Board, and therefore their history/background is important to all. Not just fans who have money in this account.
Did you have money in any of Craig Whyte's companies when you were asking questions of him? Or was that none of your business as well?
In short..................answer the fuckin question, or get somebody else oan here tae answer it.

    Oh the Irony of it.
And your wee dream may be dead with this .He knows the Majority wont buy Independence so he is going for this.

Scotland gets choice of 'independence lite' in referendum
Alex Salmond plans to give voters choice to cut financial ties with UK and choose an independent tax and welfare system
Alex Salmond is preparing to stage a referendum on Scottish independence that will offer voters a second option – full financial autonomy while remaining part of the United Kingdom.
In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, the first minister said that allowing Scotland to have fiscal autonomy without full independence was "a very popular option" with "plenty of evidence" of public support. "I think there's a case for that. The case is essentially a democratic case," he said.
His move towards staging a two-question poll comes after several weeks of mounting pressure from David Cameron and Nick Clegg to clarify his plans for the referendum, which is due to take place in 2014 or 2015.
Although he confirmed that he expects 16- and 17-year-olds will be allowed to vote in the referendum, for the first time in British electoral history, Salmond has so far refused to publish details about the proposal, including the exact questions.
During last week's Tory party conference, Cameron taunted the first minister for his reticence, accusing him of being a "big feartie", running scared of the voters, because he knew independence did not have majority support. At the Liberal Democrat conference, Clegg challenged Salmond to have "the courage of his convictions" by holding a single-question "yes or no" referendum.
But, said Salmond, the Tories and the Lib Dems had "no mandate whatsoever, not a scintilla of a mandate" in Scotland, having come a poor third and fourth at elections in 2010 and 2011, and could not jointly command a majority in Scotland.
"It's absurd for a prime minister to assume he has any legitimacy in instructing the Scottish parliament when it should hold a referendum on Scotland's constitutional future, when we've got an impeccable mandate reinforced by a massive popular assent while they've no mandate whatsoever. The days of Tory PMs telling Scotland what to do are over," he said.
The vote on Scottish independence is now almost certain to take place, after Salmond won an unprecedented victory in May's elections for the devolved Scottish parliament, winning the first overall majority at Holyrood.
Many observers expect the referendum to be staged before or around the next UK general election in May 2015, but polling shows the SNP has yet to convince a majority of voters to support full independence, making a less dramatic second option very attractive to Salmond.
Recent polls suggest up to 38% of Scots support independence, but the vast majority of polls and the most authoritative studies of Scottish public opinion show that fiscal autonomy within the UK – an option known as "devo max" – is the most popular option by two to one.
Under that option, the Scottish parliament would raise all its own taxes and run its own welfare system, but would share services such as defence, overseas aid and foreign affairs with the rest of the UK. Holyrood currently controls all education, health, policing, local taxation, environment and domestic transport policies.
The UK government is pushing for further measures to give Holyrood control over income tax rates, allow it to borrow at least £2.2bn and set other minor taxes through Westminster as part of the Scotland bill, as ministers speed up devolution across the UK. The Welsh and Northern Irish governments are also likely to get further minor tax and financial powers: Stormont was given control last month of air passenger duty.
Offering Scots a second referendum option might make life difficult for Clegg and the Lib Dems in the UK government. On Saturday, the Scottish Lib Dems agreed to reinvigorate their campaign for Scottish "home rule" within the UK. This position is close to fiscal autonomy, but Willie Rennie, the leader of the Scottish Lib Dems, insisted their proposal was to introduce fiscal federalism for all parts of the UK, not to give Scotland special treatment.
However Danny Alexander, the chief secretary to the Treasury and the most senior Scot in the UK cabinet, ruled out any significant extra powers for Scotland in the near future, beyond new measures in the Scotland bill, suggesting he would object to any Lib Dem support for Salmond's second question. He said those would "take years to work out", and that should be prioritised. "I don't rule out further change, but I would say that the most important thing is to take [on] the provisions in the Scotland bill, which are hugely ambitious, hugely significant actually and in some ways more significant than devolution itself. This is the biggest shift in financial powers and accountability within the UK for 300 years."
Salmond said that Donald Dewar, the architect of Scottish devolution, had set a precedent when Labour's devolution referendum in 1997 asked voters to make a choice about devolution and whether or not to give Holyrood tax-altering powers. The answer was "yes" to both.
Salmond said civic society groups, pressure groups such as Reform Scotland and senior businessmen such as Jim McColl, an advocate of greater fiscal powers for Scotland had indicated "broad support" for a second option. They could back a non-party campaign for fiscal autonomy. "So people then vote for independence or the status quo [or] they could also vote for fiscal autonomy or the status quo. Not, incidentally, three questions on a ballot paper: two questions á la 1997," he said.
Cameron has accepted that Salmond has a clear mandate to stage the referendum without interference from UK government, but senior figures in the coalition and Labour are exploring options for Westminster to influence or oversee the vote.
They have raised fears that the Scottish government could skew the referendum by setting a biased question, using unfair methods of choosing voters or fixing unfair rules for campaign donations. Labour sources have said the Electoral Commission should be allowed to set the questions and rules for donations.
