  1. What an utter load of toss. Religion should be kept the fuck away from football and anything else I'm interested in. This thread perfectly demonstrates this point.
  2. To be fair, the conditions are horrendous. Surprised the game wasn't abandoned.
  3. ESPN will have his opta stats if you can stretch yourself to using google.
  4. Rather a lot actually. Just because a team gets relegated from the EPL doesn't make their players poor by default. Most of the Birmingham side that did so well last season where also in the side relegated two seasons previous.
  5. we know, but who cares? he only deserves criticism if he stops putting the effort in or is complete garbage, if we sign him, and that goes for any player If you really want to panic though, Paul Hartley wants to come back to Scotland and Walter needs some cover for the Midfield and has an odd habit of signing ageing Scotland Internationals on the cheap.
  6. Either wee flecky stands up to be counted (i know it's not 100% his primary position but he has the tools to be a great winger also) or we try to tempt Dundee Utd They are in the genuine shit (finished 3rd and won the cup yet still needed a 1m cash injection from the Thompson family) so if we could offer abt 850k with future add-ons they would be hard pushed to reject imho Eagles Davis Edu Conway Now that is one menacing midfield four. A proper statement of intent. Not that I will get carried away but this is a positive step in the right direction after the constant negativity of the last 6 weeks I forgot about Conway, good call. He would make an excellent addition to the squad.
  7. I too had a season ticket during the 80's and anyone who is moaning only had to have gone through that to appreciate what we have. I recall going week after week and sitting in a half empty stadium getting pumped regularly by all and sundry. We have won 2 Titles on the bounce, got to a European final with pretty much most of the players still at the club and have one of the best managers there is. If that's failure let it continue.
  8. You do realise the second line up was a joke? You seriously believe we would start a CL game with a back 7? As for Broadfoot, he was our Right Back for the entirety of the UEFA cup run and if fit I think he's a better defender than Whittaker. Whittaker is better going forward than going back but can defend if he needs to. Who the hell else would play there?
  9. If Eagles signs and nobody else leaves I fully expect our starting 11 to be McGregor Broadfoot Bougherra Webster Papac Eagles Davis Edu Whittaker Lafferty Miller In Europe he will go with McGregor Broadfoot Bougherra McCulloch Webster Weir Wilson Papac Davis Edu Miller
  10. Another thing worth mentioning is that he primarily is a right/left winger/midfielder which hopefully means Davis will finally be played regularly in the middle alongside Edu with Whittaker or Fleck filling in on the other side. Either that or Walter is going to play him in the holding role
  11. Well he's no worse than DMB and has played well while at Burnley at a level higher (EPL) or comparable (Championship) to the SPL. Also doesn't get blown off the ball by a passing gust of wind.
  12. I guarantee he'll be getting easily more money than we could pay him, however, wtf! Is this the limits of his ambition. Go play with a mid-table championship team, rather than have another punt at trophies and Europe. It would appear that Boyd's decision was completely based on money and for this reason alone my opinion of him has lessened greatly. The guy seriously has zero ambition, I'm frankly stunned.
  13. If we don't sell any of them we can play 6 at the back in the Champions League
  14. Great point here - the celebrity status of players like Lampard, Gerrard, Crouch, Beckham etc means it is hard for those players you mentioned to break through. People saying England have no youth coming through are talking bollocks - they were runners up in last years Euros! Germany are mixing the youth of their U21 team with experience and its working. England are just mixing experience with experience - and didn't even give guys like Cahill, Shawcross, Johnson, Rodwell etc a look in. If you look at the players Muff has listed there, England have the talent to build a team for the future but the chances are they will hold on to the "Golden Generation" for as long as possible when the fact of the matter is, they have failed tournament after tournament and are not going to do any better now they are in their 30's Anyway speaking of Golden Generations: Wilson, Dorrans, Fletcher, Adam, Wallace, Fleck, Snodgrass.......... Bring it on. It's not that they don't have the young players, it's the inability of the top clubs to give them an opportunity. Like Waddle said last night, the clubs train the talent out of them in order to turn them into holding or box to box players. It is quite rare that any of them will get an opportunity. Scotland have also had relative success at U21 and Youth level but how many of them got the opportunity to progress? How many young midfielders or strikers eventually become defenders or moving to obscurity in lower leagues just to get a game? The amount of Money being ploughed into the EPL is to the detriment of the National Team. The danger of losing that income by being relegated is far too dangerous so their is absolutely no incentive with taking chances with untried youngsters. When Fergie did it in the early 90's it was a gamble worth taking and those players formed the spine of the England national side for almost a decade. As it stands almost 20 years on, no manager in their right mind would allow it as failure could effectively bankrupt their club. So they'll go out and spend 10-30 million on a foreign creative midfielder and a foreign striker. The youngsters then adapt to play in other positions just to get a game or end up moving to the championship or god help them, the Scottish League.
  15. I disagree. If it's a game were the team generally lump the ball from defence to striker then most games he will stroll but if its a team that plays it along the deck with slick passing and pacey forwards he struggles big time. IMO The entire English backline bar Ferdinand are ordinary and happier when crosses are being reined in. They cannot cope when players pass around them. Terry plays at Chelsea in a back 4 that can cover for his lack of pace and movement. As for the others in the England team, Gerrard is a box to box player, Lampard is a box to box player, Carrick is a holding midfielder as is Barry. They don't have a creative midfielder due to the big teams going out and buying in foreign players in that position rather than bring through a youngster and train them to play there. Gerrard struggled last season when their main creative player was sold and not replaced (Alonso). Out of all the Clubs in the top half of the EPL I cannot think of a single team with an English creative midfielder in their first 11. It's all very fine having players that can run into space and run up and down for 90 minutes but if you don't have someone that can pick them out with a pass you are screwed before you even get on the park when you get to the top level. Just look at us in the Champions League. Our best sides over the years have had creativity through, Laudrup, Gascoigne, De Boer, Arteta, even Buffel. Without that little spark you are on a hiding to nothing at the top level.
  16. Scotland's international decline was blamed on the influx of foreign players during the 90's; are we now seeing the same thing happening in England? The top teams in England all have teams with exceptional foreign talent with a smattering of English players. Prior to the world cup these English players were being touted as 'World Class' players. In reality the majority of them are ordinary players who normally play in great teams surrounded by great players. Ask Barry Ferguson who while playing under Advocaat looked a class apart, but was surrounded by, Numan, Mols, De Boer and Van Bronkhorst to name but a few. Good Players look like great players when surrounded by them. Surround them with players of their own level and you get the current England team.
  17. They deserve more than a mention. Finished runners up to Brazil in qualifying by 1 point and are notoriously stingy at the back. They also are happy to switch to route 1 if they need to and are extremely effective at it.
  18. Tipped Argentina at the start and seen nothing to change my mind. My outside bet is Paraguay who play regularly at Altitude, don't concede many and simply bludgeon the opposition defence into submission.
  19. Not dealing in the same sort of figures here but I had an bill based on an estimate from HMRC 5 years ago for just over 12k, after the accountant had been let loose on it I actually owed HMRC £46. Even if there is any truth in this, HMRC do have a tendency to slightly overestimate the amount they are owed.
  20. Do those fifteen minutes require running? If so, why sign Boyd then? Have you seen Phillips play? Judging by what he does for his 15 minutes Boyd's only requirement will be to stand in or around the penalty box and if the ball comes to him shoot. Sounds like it's his perfect role.
  21. I assume you are referring to Benitez. He's a loan signing, he didn't buy him and he also spent a long time out injured and playing in Copa America. Mcleish is after a poacher to replace Philips who will probably be retiring at the end of the season and needs someone who can last longer than 15 minutes on the pitch and won't cost him anything or very little. If Boyd goes there it is a gamble as to whether he can perform in the EPL but it wouldn't be the first time he surprised people. When he moved from Kilmarnock most people didn't expect him to continue scoring like a machine and people certainly didn't think he would do it for Scotland. If he goes, good luck to him, he's contributed more than a lot of players have over the last 5 years and if it wasn't for his goals we probably wouldn't be where we are at the moment. Our problem will be how do we replace him as I cannot see any of our current strikers getting anywhere near his goal ratio.
  22. Whilst rehearsing The Celtic Story at the Kings Theatre in Glasgow. Is that odd enough?
